National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi Statutes of the Diocesan Shrine Parziuncala- The Shrine af Our Lady af the Angels Initially approved and effective, September 27,2008, Archbishop George H. Niederauer Modified, approved and effective, July 1, 2013, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone These statutes seek to conform to the requirements of The Code of Canon Law, canon 1232, which states that such statutes address: 1) (Purpose) Statement of Mission, 2) Authority of the Rector, 3) the Administration of Goods. These statutes, along with applicable agreements, likewise determine the accountability of the administration of the Shrine to the Diocesan Bishop as well as other pertinent information. STATEMENT OF MISSION It is the purpose of the Porziuncola - The Shrine of Our Lady of the Angels, to provide more abundant means of salvation, through the rich liturgical and devotional life of the Roman Catholic Church for the Christian faithful, including those who come as pilgrims from around the world to the City of Saint Francis, who seek to encounter the living God through religious worship and special devotion to St. Francis of Assisi. The Shrine exists to promote the spiritual message and legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi within the context of the Catholic faith, to assist the faithful in expressing authentic devotion and to bring them, through such devotion, to a deeper and richer experience of the Christian life. In addition, the Shrine will seek to promote dialogue with men and women of other faiths in the tradition of Saint Francis and our recent Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. By his witness, Saint Francis of Assisi exemplifies virtues which are important to people of various states oflife. His deep trust in God and acceptance of His will, his exemplary response to causes of peace, tranquility and calm, his express efforts to promote reconciliation, harmony and respect for all of God's creation, speak powerfully to contemporary society. The Porziuncola - The Shrine of Our Lady of the Angels, proclaims these same virtues of the Christian life and invites men and women to value and strive after them. The Porziuncola - The Shrine of Our Lady af the Angels stands in the midst of the City as a religious sanctuary, inviting all people to refreshment, reflection, renewal, and reconciliation. As a house of prayer, the Shrine offers individuals, as well as groups of the faithful, opportunities for the celebration of the faith and an environment conducive to personal devotion. The Christian witness revealed through the personal example of Saint Francis of Assisi, recounted in word and art, becomes an important and effective instrument to inspire and encourage faith. 1 AUTHORITY OF THE-RECTOR The Porziuncola - The Shrine afOur Lady afthe Angels, is contained within property of the duly erected and recognized National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Rector of the Diocesan Shrine, Parziuncala - The Shrine afOur Lady afthe Angels is the same Rector entrusted with responsibility for planning and executing the program and activities of the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi. This same Rector is responsible for appointing and supervising a staff which assists him in carrying out the objectives of the Diocesan Shrine. Members of the staff, both religious and lay, may exercise duties which pertain to both the National and Diocesan Shrines. All other administrative responsibilities and advisory groups shall conform to the approved statutes of the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi, which were effective July I, 2013. Any amendments to such statues and advisory groups that have been or shall be adopted by the National Shrine will be considered applicable to the administration of the Diocesan Shrine. ADMINISTRATION OF GOODS Given the fact that the Diocesan Shrine, Porziuncola - The Shrine afOur Lady afthe Angels, is contained within property of the duly erected and recognized National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi, the administration of all goods pertaining to this Diocesan Shrine shall be regulated by the approved statutes which were effective for the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi on July 1, 2013. Any amendments to such statues and advisory groups that have been or shall be adopted will be considered applicable to the administration of the Diocesan Shrine.
