Celebration of Excellence APRIL 23, 2021 Ceremony Kekoa Kaluhiokalani Recordings of the virtual award presentations can be retrieved from the Dr. Kekoa Kaluhiokalani is an associate professor in Celebration of Excellence webpage at www.muskingum.edu/coe Muskingum University’s Department of English. Dr. Kaluhiokalani teaches British literature, world literature, and a variety of topics courses. He is the coordinator for Welcome Arts and Humanities Program and leads various programs Susan S. Hasseler, President associated with the Edinburgh International Theatre Fringe Festival. In addition, Dr. Kaluhiokalani leads Invocation travel-related programs to such destinations as London, Rev. Julia Wright, University Chaplain Paris, Ireland, Scotland, Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Hawaii. INTRODUCTION President Hasseler Address Faculty Awards Kekoa Kaluhiokalani, Associate Professor “The Threshold of the Temple of Excellence” The William Oxley Thompson Award for Musical Reflection Excellence in Teaching The award is named for a Muskingum graduate of the Louisa Smith, Class of 2021 Class of 1878. He was one of the most renowned educators “Als Luise Die Briefe” from Mozart of his time and he served for nearly three decades as a transformational President of The Ohio State University. Presentation of LEADERSHIP Awards Ana Kehrberg Nancy Evangelista, Provost Presentation of ACADEMIC Awards The William Rainey Harper Award for Jane Varley, Chair Division of Arts and Humanities Outstanding Scholarship The award is named for a Muskingum graduate of the Paul Szalay, Chair Class of 1870. He was a leading scholar and educator of Division of Natural, Applied, and Health Sciences his time. He became the first President of the University of Chicago. Sandra Schroer, Chair Laura Hilton Division of Business, Education, and Social Sciences Provost Evangelista The Cora I. Orr Faculty Service Presentation of FACULTY Awards The award is named in honor of a faculty member and administrator who served Muskingum University with Provost Evangelista distinction for four decades. Closing Danny Ingold President Hasseler Muskie of the Year Award Leadership Awards This award recognizes a student who has demonstrated excellence in academic growth and achievement, and excellence in campus and community engagement, while making contributions to the Muskingum University community through their leadership and participation in campus Campus Program of the Year programs, organizations, and activities. Caketacular-Muskingum Programming Board Taylor Brown Committed to Diversity and Inclusion Award Outstanding Fraternity or Sorority Students are recognized for this award based on their demonstrated commitment over time to the Kappa Sigma principles and ideals of diversity and inclusion. Cieanna Jones Outstanding Student Organization East Hill Resident Assistant of the Year Muskingum Programming Board Jacob Reed Recreation Staff Member of the Year Emerging Leader Award Emma Horsley The Emerging Leader Award is presented to a first- or second-year student who has contributed significantly to the community through their involvement in a campus organization, athletic team, Staff Member of the Year residential community, or a community service program. The nominee must also show significant Sarah Young-Dickson potential for continued leadership. Gavyn Freeland Student Leader of the Year Award The Student Leader of the Year award recognizes an upper-class student who has shown Ignition Program Achievement Award outstanding leadership during their Muskingum University experience. This student will have The Ignition Program Achievement Award recognizes Muskingum University students who have demonstrated a commitment to creating positive change in our campus community. made a significant impact in developing and promoting student innovation and entrepreneurship. Macy McAdams These students are chosen based on fulfilling the mission of the Ignition Program to create an environment for the Muskingum University Community where entrepreneurial ideas can become reality. Student Organization Advisor of the Year Olivia Lang Jacob Milner James Dooley Greek Member of the Year Unsung STUDENT Hero Award Sara Woods This award recognizes a student who works behind-the-scenes of a successful recognized student organization, athletic team, group, or residential community. This award is given to a student who consistently gives their all, going above and beyond the call of duty on a regular basis without 2020 Muskie Fellows expectation of recognition. Fisk Endowed Scholarship Fund Academic Department Awards Cheyenne Van Gundy Arts & Humanities Mabel Woodrow Gill Art Award Awarded by the Art department to a senior student whose artwork in the Senior Capstone Art Joyce Alesandrini Award for Exemplary Leadership Exhibition is recognized as exemplary. Awarded to a graduating senior whose contributions to the Music department include musical excellence, outstanding service, and a spirit of selflessness to the department’s students, faculty, Macey Mills and staff. David Esselburn Gleason Memorial Award Awarded by the Communication, Media and Theatre department to an outstanding Theatre student, Amos Family Award in memory of Nancy and Marilyn Gleason former Muskingum University students. Awarded by the Communication, Media and Theatre and English departments to superior Ava Hayslip sophomore or junior students. Kevon Hickman, Broadcast Journalism Layton Memorial Scholarship Fund Kailyn Shalosky, Print Journalism Awarded by the Communication, Media and Theatre department to an outstanding student in memory of Charles and Ferne Layton, former Muskingum University professors. Doris Anderson Memorial Award in Humanities and Language Evelyn Barnhouse Awarded in memory of the former Muskingum classics professor to a student who exhibits interest Jeanne Stevens in and devotion to the study of the classics. The student is selected by the department of Religion and Philosophy and the Division Chair of Arts and Humanities. Amy B. Leiendecker Award in Music Kilie Rock Awarded by the Music department to a senior for four years of outstanding service. Katlyn Thomas Matilda Bailey Award in English Casey Wilson Awarded by the English department to students of English studies possessing academic merit and high moral character, with preference given to prospective teachers. John McCance Scholarship in Broadcast Media Janae Johnson Awarded to a student interested in radio technology and engineering. The scholarship was established by Grant Hafley in memory of John McCance, a well-known area broadcast engineer, serving for many years as the chief engineer for the AVC Communications stations. Mr. McCance was also Beulah Brooks Brown Creative Writing Award instrumental in developing radio broadcasting facilities at Muskingum University. Awarded by the English department to upper-class students majoring in English who exhibit outstanding talent in the area of creative writing. Will Ford Brooke Wilkins Agnes Moorehead Scholarship in Theatre Awarded by the Communication, Media and Theatre department to an outstanding junior Theatre Joe L. Dubbert Award in History student in memory of the late actress who was a Muskingum alumna. Maria Lollini Augusta Kinzel Hope Neal Elizabeth Nease Cheyenne Van Gundy H.P. Mount Scholarship Natural, Applied & Health Sciences Awarded to a student pursuing studies in the field of theology. Madison Dodd American Chemical Society Award Awarded to an outstanding junior and senior Chemistry student. Prout Family Creative Award in Visual Arts Rachel Hankin, Junior Awarded by the Art department for an outstanding work of art. Kilie Rock, Senior Hannah Wilson Award in Analytical Chemistry Prout Family Creative Writing Award in Literary Arts Awarded to the student who displayed an outstanding performance in Analytical Chemistry. Awarded by the English department for an outstanding written work.
