Turabian Style Highlights Laying Out the Text (chapter 14 in the manual) • Margins • One (1) inch margins on all sides with left margin justification • Indentations & Spacing • Five (5) or eight (8) spaces for paragraphs and block quotations (be consistent throughout!) • Double space all text EXCEPT block quotations which should be single spaced (and be sure to drop quotation marks and keep indentation of quotation consistent with your paragraph indentation). • Pagination • Omit page numbers from title pages. • Be sure to right justify page numbers on the top of each page. • Your last name is optional with pagination; however, Dr. Hoffeditz prefers your last name appear! • Use only Arabic numerals. Capitalization, Italics, Quotation Marks, & Numbers (chapters 3-4 in the manual) • Capitalization • Titles of books, articles, pamphlets, etc. • Sacred scriptures like “Bible” and “Genesis” but NOT for “biblical” or “scripture” and NOT for pronouns referring to God (e.g., “he” rather than “He”). • Italics & Quotation Marks • Use italics for titles of books, periodicals, & pamphlets—DO NOT underline! • Use quotation marks for articles, chapter titles, dissertation titles, and other unpublished works. • Numbers • Do not begin a sentence with a numeral—spell it out. • Spell out all numbers through one hundred and any whole numbers followed by “hundred,” “thousand,” etc. • For all other numbers, including biblical references, numerals are used (e.g., Matthew 7:4 or v. 4; 200 BCE or 400 CE; 200 BC or 400 AD). General Rules: Preferences of Drs. Mach & Hoffeditz • Papers should be typed, double spaced, and stapled together. • Do NOT use folders, binders, etc. • Use standard written English and write from the third person point of view. • Use Times New Roman font no larger than size twelve (12). • Use ONE INCH margins on all sides • Do NOT use contractions, colloquialisms, or passive voice. • Vary your word choices and do spell everything correctly! Footnotes (chapters 8 & 11 in manual) • Either Footnotes or Endnotes is acceptable, but footnotes are preferred (computer will insert them—use “Insert footnote” function). • Use only the “N” (Note) citation format in chapter 11. • Use Arabic numerals in superscript at the end of the sentence. • Indent first line of the footnote and place subsequent lines at the left margin. • End each footnote with a period (use the Tab function for this). • Text and footnotes get separated by a “separator” or “continuation separator” (a line above it—the computer does this automatically). • Use smaller font size for footnotes. For Dr. Mach, please also put a space between each footnote. • When you use subsequent entries from the same source interspersed with other footnotes from other sources, use this short form (section 8.111): Author’s last name, abbreviated title, page number. • Use of “Ibid” is fine for consecutive citations; just be sure to indicate pagination when it differs. (e.g. Ibid, 34). Bibliography (chapters 9 & 11 in manual) • Use only the “B” (Bibliography) citation format in chapter 11. • Head with the title Bibliography. • Type first line of each entry flush with left margin; use a hanging indentation for subsequent lines. • If you’re using more than one source by the same author, use an eight space underline rather than typing in the author’s name again. • Italicize titles of books, newspapers, and journals. • For history papers, separate primary from secondary sources using headings (remember: a primary source is one written at the same time of an event, including translations; a secondary source is one written after the event.) • Works listed on the bibliography include both read and cited sources. • Format for an online source: Author. Title. Sense of where it’s coming from. “The Formation of Latin Christendom: The Roman Church.” In EuroDocs: Primary Historical Documents from Western Europe [database online]. Provo, Utah: BYU, 1996-. [cited 10 April 2003]. Available from http://www……… .
