SIUE’s season opener is at Division I Bradley on Nov. 15. HOME games played at the Vadalabene Center Coaching Staff Head Coach Marty Simmons To say Marty Simmons has been successful at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville would be somewhat of an understatement. Simmons has transformed the Cougar basketball program into an Elite Eight program in four seasons. Simmons led the Cougars to the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in 15 seasons in 2004-2005 and took his team to the next level this season with three wins in the Great Lakes Regional Championships in Rensselaer, Ind.. The Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year for 2004-2005, Simmons and his Cougars have been a recent mainstay in the national rankings. SIUE has appeared in the na- tional rankings 14 different weeks during the past two seasons. SIUE had appeared previous only 11 times in its history. The Cougars have made strides under Simmons’ leadership. In his rookie season with SIUE, the Cougars compiled a 9-18 record and were one game shy of qualifying for the GLVC Tournament. In his second season, SIUE landed its fi rst berth in the conference tournament since the 1998-99 season and fi nished with a 16-12 record. Simmons came to SIUE after being a long-time assistant coach at the University of Evansville. Simmons was named the sixth men’s basketball coach in SIUE history on April 3, 2002. He holds a Business Administration degree from Evansville in 1987 and a master’s of business administration from Evansville in 1993. Simmons was named an Illinois Mr. Basketball in 1983 after leading Lawrenceville High School to back-to-back state championships in 1982 and 1983. In four seasons as a prep player, Simmons and his teammates compiled a 123-7 record. In 1994, he was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He continues to hold several state high school records for post-season appearances, free throws and rebounds as well as being No. 5 on the all-time scoring list with 2,986 points. Simmons played for then-Indiana University Coach Bob Knight from 1983 to 1985. He was the Most Valuable Player of the 1983 Hoosier Classic as a freshman and helped the Hoosiers to a Final Eight appearance in the 1984 NCAA Tournament. Indiana’s second round 72-68 win on March 22, 1984, was Michael Jordan’s fi nal game at the University of North Carolina. The Hoosiers were runners-up in the 1985 National Invitational Tournament (NIT). After a transfer to Evansville to follow Coach Jim Crews, Simmons scored 1,265 points in two seasons and led the Purple Aces to a conference championship. In 1988, the team made its fi rst-ever appearance in the NIT. Simmons went on to play one season for the Lacrosse Catbirds of the Continental Basketball Association in 1988-1989 and one year as an All-Star for the Illinois Express of the World Basketball League in 1989-1990. He turned to the coaching profession as a restricted earnings coach at his alma mater in 1990. From 1990 to 1996, Evansville won two Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championships, appeared in two NCAA Tournaments and one NIT. As the recruiting coordinator, Simmons was responsible for bringing in three Academic All-American candidates and eight players who would later play professional basketball. In 1996, Simmons left for Wartburg College where he posted a 10-14 record in men’s basketball while serving as a health and wellness instructor and the men’s golf coach. He returned to his alma mater in 1997 as a full-time assistant, helping the Purple Aces to one Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship and one NCAA Tournament appearance. Simmons and his wife, Angie, have four children: Brittany, Kelsey, Blake, and Johnathan Cole.
