English IV, English IV CN, and English IV AP Summer Reading Assignments Ridge Point High School INCOMING ENGLISH IV: Students who will be taking English IV are expected to choose ONE of the following titles to read and annotate: Looking for Alaska by John Green, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, OR The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie Students are encouraged to annotate on how the author develops the theme, or meaning of the work as a whole, as well as make notes in regards to any text-to-self, text-to-text, and/or text-to- world connections. Students will be required to complete writing activities and shared-text class discussions, using their knowledge of the novel, during the second or third week of school. Students might also be expected to take a basic reading comprehension assessment over the novel during the second or third week of school. INCOMING ENGLISH IV AP (AP LIT): Students who will be taking English IV AP (AP Literature) are expected to read: The Stranger by Albert Camus, AND EITHER ONE OF THESE Pulitzer Prize Winners: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson Students are encouraged to read closely, tracking how the author develops the theme, or meaning of the work as a whole. Students will be assessed over the author’s craft as it contributes to the development of the theme through an analytical essay during the first weeks of school. INCOMING ENGLISH IV COLLEGE NOW: Students who will be taking English IV College Now are expected to read: David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell, AND EITHER: Looking for Alaska by John Green, OR The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, OR The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie Students are encouraged, while reading David and Goliath, to pay particular attention to Gladwell’s style and his use of concrete detail to support his argument. Students should read the novel of their choice closely, tracking how the author develops the theme, or meaning of the work .
