Chun was elevated to his current role on Aug. 1, 2016, after having spent seven seasons as Cal’s associate head coach (2009-16), five as an assistant coach (2004-09) and two as an administra- tive assistant (2002-04) following a five-year playing career for the Golden Bears (1997-2002). In a season cut short by the coronavirus, Chun’s team put together many highlights including four top-5 team finishes: the Golden Bears placed second at the MacKenzie Invitational, fourth at the Southwestern Invitational and fifth at both the Tav- istock and Lamkin San Diego Classic. Meanwhile, junior Finigan Tilly placed in the top five in back-to-back tournaments and had three top-20 finishes overall. Chun took his first team to the NCAA Championships in his current role in 2019 and participated in his eighth NCAA’s overall. The Golden Bears finished 10th overall in their first appearance at the NCAA’s since 2016 for their highest finish since Chun was the associate head coach for a pair of teams that reached the semifinals of match play at the 2012 and 2013 NCAA’s. Cal, who was ranked as high as No. 6 by Golf- week/Sagarin in the spring of 2019, won a pair of events in 2018-19 at the Ka’anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational to close the fall schedule and The Farms Invitational to open the spring. In addition, Cal won the inaugural Big Match against Stanford. Chun was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in his sec- ond season at the helm in 2017-18 after the Bears were among the nation’s top 10 for most of the campaign. Cal won for the first three times under Chun in 2017-18 includ- ing a signature victory against one of the top fields in the nation at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational after finishing last at the event in Chun’s first campaign in 2016-17. Cal was also a winner at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate before finishing the regular season with three consecutive second-place showings at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate, The Goodwin and the Western In- tercollegiate. Cal was fifth at the Pac-12 Championships be- fore a disappointing 10th-place showing at the NCAA Raleigh Regional kept the Bears out of the NCAA Championships.
