t Anti-Apartheid Movement t Anti-Apartheid Movement A 13 Mandela Street London NW1 0DW Tel 071-387 7966 Fax 071-388 0173 NC/Sept 90/4 Minutes of the Special Meeting of the National Committee held on 3rd July 1990 at Westminster Central Hall Present: The meeting was chaired by Robert Hughes MP and attended by members of the National Committee and representatives from invited organisations including the Southern Africa Coalition, the Nelson Mandela British Reception Committee, the National Steering Committee of Local Authorities Against Apartheid and affiliated trade unions of the TUC and AAM. Mrs Mandela and Mrs Tambo attended together with the following members of the National Executive Committee of the ANC; Thabo Mbeki, Joe Nhlanhla, and Aziz Pahad. A full list of those present was recorded. The meeting was opened by Robert Hughes MP who welcomed those present, both members of the National Committee and those to whom special invitations had been extended. He explained that the purpose of the meeting was to hear an address from the Deputy President of the African National Congress, Mr Nelson Mandela. He regretted that he had to inform the meeting that the ANC had indicated that due to his gruelling schedule Mr Mandela was unlikely to be present since he was exhausted and required to rest. However alternative arrangements were being made. Mike Terry, the Movement's Executive Secretary, was then invited to introduce the documents which had been prepared for the meeting including the future campaign plans of the Movement. A number'of other speakers addressed the meeting including Dan Thea the -Chair of the AAM's Black and Ethnic Minorities Committee who reported on the meeting of the Black community which Mr Mandela had addressed that morning. Following these contributions the AAM's President Trevor Huddleston CR addressed the meeting and welcomed Mrs Mandela who together with other members of the ANC delegation had arrived to represent Mr Mandela. Mrs Mandela apologised for the absence of Nelson Mandela and then delivered the speech which he had prepared for delivery to the meeting. Following this there was a short period for questions which covered questions including the role of Inkatha, the position of political prisoners, and the role of culture. Replies were given by Thabo Mbeki, Aziz Pahad, Joe Nhlanhla and Mrs Tambo. The meeting concluded with thanks being expressed to.Mrs Mandela and all the members of the ANC delegation for attend!and it was agreed to ask them to express the meetings best wishes to Nelson Mandela. Members of the National Committee were reminded that the next meeting would be on Saturday 7th July in Manchester. FOR FREEDOM IN SOUTHERN AFRICA.
