The red and gold lines mostly run along the north-northeast corridor, while the Blue and Green lines run along the West-East corridor. The two corridors connect at the Five Point station and are the only station where all four lines can be switched. The MARTA Rail System Map All trains are identified by destination, and an automated announcement system announces the direction of trains, bus and other transit connections, as well as landmarks that are located at each train station. During the daytime, trains on the Red and Golden Lines in italics run along the entire main line from north to south and are separated north from the Lindbergh Center (N6). All trains in the southbound carriage are identified with the destination on the ELECTRONIC LCD signs at the front and sides of the train and on each carriage. After 8:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8:50 p.m. on weekends, the Red Line operates like a shuttle between North Springs (N11) and Lindbergh Center (N6), connecting with the Golden Line at the Lindbergh Center. Blue and green lines service the east-west highway line together between Ashby (W3) and Edgewood-Candle Park (E4). At Ashby, the Blue Line service continues with its E. Holmes (W5), while the Green Line trains redirect to Bankhead Station (P4). The Green Line service stops at Edgewood Candler Park, while the Blue Line continues east to Indian Creek. After 8.30pm on weekdays and 8.50pm on weekends, the Green Line service operates as a shuttle service between Bankhead (P4) and as Vine City (stop W2). MARTA switched to a color route naming system in October 2009. Previous system maps used orange to mark the North-South line and blue to the East-West line. Many suburban stations offer designated free daily and paid long-term parking in the MARTA-driven park and drive a lot. These stations also Kiss and ride the passenger to disembark the parking spaces closest to the entrances of the stations. Operation Marta is open from about 5 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays and 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Routes on the line consist of 10 minutes on weekdays during rush hour and 12 minutes at noon and 20 minutes at night and on weekends. For two routes operating in the same directions, routes are reduced to 5 minutes during rush hour and 6 minutes at noon and 10 minutes on weekends during the day. All rail lines run 20 minutes during the late night (8:30 p.m. on weekdays, 8:50 p.m. on weekends) mainly due to the Red Line only running from North Springs to Lindbergh Center stations; also with the Green Line from Bankhead to Vine City. Because of the current rail maintenance program, weekends run out variable and can range from the usual 20 minutes to as much as 24 minutes, with green and red lines sometimes truncated all weekend. On weekends in the latter case, runs along common lines would increase from 10 minutes to 20 minutes before budget cuts in 2005 affected the rail system, MARTA initially operated trains every eight minutes during the day on weekdays on each route, with the North South Line operating on a combined four-minute route between the Lindberg Center and airport stations on the highway. On Saturdays, it was every ten minutes (five minutes combined on the North-South Barrel Line), and on Sundays it was every 15 minutes (7.5 minutes on the north-south barrel line). At night, trains operated every 15 minutes. The trains are powered by an electrified third rail and can be operated in any combination of two to eight rail cars, with six carriages being normal lengths for the blue, red and gold rail lines, and two carriages for the green line (due to the shorter platform at Bankhead). It will replace all current rail cars. In 2002, martA signed a contract with Alstom to overhaul all 218 C-310 and C-311 vehicles as part of a $246 million repair contract. The first restored vehicles were serviced on March 12, 2006. Rehabilitation was completed on February 23, 2009. In 2011, Alstom received an additional five-year, $117 million contract with MARTA to upgrade its train control systems and SCADA. The new technology is designed to make MARTA's rail team more efficient, improve communication between trains and stations, enhance monitoring capabilities, respond faster and reduce maintenance costs. The project includes upgrades for all 318 rail cars to install an advanced fault identification and monitoring system (FIMS) and a full-color driver display built by the Tangent quester. The new systems were tested by the mini-fleet in 2015. On December 1, 2017, MARTA issued a notice of intent to enter into a $146 million contract for the rail fleet extension program with Kinki Sharyo International LLC. On January 26, 2018, Kinki Sharyo signed a $146 million contract to repair the railways. Work begins with 118 cars, another 94 variants.
