coral fungus Ramaria spp. Kingdom: Fungi FEATURES Phylum: Basidiomycota Coral fungus is the name given to fungi of several Class: Agaricomycetes different genera. They develop in a branched mass Order: Gomphales that resembles coral. The members of the genus Ramaria are medium or large (about six inches tall) Family: Gomphacea in size. They may have a short, thick stalk at the base ILLINOIS STATUS or be a mass of separate stalks. Color varies but tends to be white or a shade of white with color at common, native the tips of the branches. The body of a fungus © James Veselenak (mycelium) is made up of strands called mycelia. The mycelium grows within the soil, a dead tree or other object and is rarely seen. The fruiting body that produces spores is generally present for only a short period of time but is the most familiar part of the fungus to people. BEHAVIORS Coral fungi may be found throughout Illinois. They grow singly or in groups on decaying wood. Unlike plants, fungi do not have roots, stems, leaves, flowers or seeds. They must absorb nutrients and water from the objects they grow in. Spores are produced in the summer and fall. The spores provide a means of reproduction, dispersal and crown coral fungus survival in poor conditions.
