With these words the Angel Gabriel greeted the young Virgin Mary. The Angel then told her that she would soon have a son, the son of the Most High (God) and asked her not to be afraid. That would have been a tall order for her for although she was legally the wife of Saint Joseph, they were not yet living together. She, a young girl, could not have foreseen how God would work all things out. But she trusted. And so as we prepare spiritually for Christmas, it is especially good to remain close to Our Lady. She had to live a long “advent” of nine months for the coming of her holy Child. She knows how to wait on the Lord! Deepening our love and devotion to the Mother of God is a perfect way to prepare for Christmas particularly through the prayers of the Rosary which is so dear to her. Our Lady was given a task, a vocation, that will last until the end of time. That task is to lead souls to her Son, Jesus, and thus to Heaven. Mary ardently desires our salvation and she aids us in our sanctification for that purpose. Our Lady is the most powerful intercessor in Heaven and her Divine Son, who perfectly obeys the Fourth Commandment, does not refuse any request of hers as her will is always perfectly aligned with His. Let us ask Our Lady to help us draw closer to Jesus especially in the holy Christmas season. And remember that Mary was the first person to adore Jesus; come, let us adore Him with Mary too! Ave Maria! Library Corner Christians, as well as all men and women, are called to holiness and happiness. But let's face it, many of us struggle to take the practical steps necessary to overcome the vices that rob us of our peace and steal our joy. The WillPower Advantage reminds us that we need to develop the proper tools that equip us to handle the challenges that we face in everyday life, as well as fight off the vices that wound us. We are called to use the free will God gifted to us by surrendering to God's grace in order to transform the world, beginning with our own lives. "The WillPower Advantage is a wise, straight-talking summons to authentic Christian discipleship. Tom Peterson and Dr. Ryan Hanning offer a compelling vision of the goal, and a practical plan for moving toward it through daily growth in holiness and happiness." Dr. Paul Thigpen "Peterson and Hanning call folks back from the idea of a road to heaven that is so easy that a modern person can walk it lackadaisically. They understand the struggles that come not just from the world in which we live, but from the weaknesses of the various personalities who inhabit that world - including ourselves. The WillPower Advantage concretely points out ways to take seriously the struggle against weakness and sin by making a commitment of the will to accept God's grace, strive against sin and evil, and seek the sanctity on earth that leads us to its perfection in heaven." Fourth Sunday of Advent 12/20/2020 PRO-LIFE DISCUSSION “Those with the least are the treasure of the Church.” Every Holiday season we are reminded of what we can do for the less fortunate. This Christmas Season, especially. Realizing the difficulties during a pandemic, be creative in your participation. Here are some suggestions: *Catholic Charities has several different ministries that offer opportunities to volunteer. *Participate, with your Parish if possible, in some kind of giving during the Holiday season, from food pantry drives to helping feed those who are homebound. Donate food to a local food drive. Prepare meals or bake cookies to give to people in need or who are self-isolating. *One of the more traditional ways to give during the holiday season is to participate or donate in soup kitchens, like the Denver Catholic Worker Soup Kitchen. *There are also state and local organizations that serve meals to the homeless. *Spending time with others is a great way to give. Be creative in the various ways you can visit the elderly or the homebound, even virtually. *Friends, family and neighbors can pitch in to help someone in the community this season, such as buying Christmas dinner or bringing them a few gifts to celebrate. With many people lonely during the holidays, give spiritually and virtually by inviting someone to join you in prayer. *Even though it has already happened this year, Colorado Gives Day is something to keep in mind. *There are plenty of organizations that donate gifts to children or families in need. Salvation Army, The Denver Rescue Mission, (local) Food Bank and Catholic Charities are a few organizations worthy to give to. Make sure you thoroughly research any organization before donating and only donate to organizations you are comfortable giving to. You can also donate unused or slightly used clothing, especially coats, socks and mittens for colder winter weather, to a clothing drive. *If you have ever attended a concert in Colorado, you may not be aware that it literally takes a community to put on a show. With venues closed, that community is out of work. If you can, contribute to the Colorado Music Relief Fund to offer financial support to the Colorado music community. During this Season, again hold in your quiet thoughts a quote from Muhammad Ali, “Service to others is the rent we pay for our space here on earth.” Faithfully prepare for Christmas during the Season. Celebrate the Birth of Christ. Wear a mask and distance when providing for others. Merry Christmas! Lighter Side Humor….. Gift Cards for Jesus At the Christmas Eve service, the pastor, quizzing some children about the nativity, asked, “What gifts did the three wise men give the Christ child?” “Gold!” one child yelled. “Frankincense!” shouted another. After a pause, a third asked, “Gift cards?” Catholic High School End-of-Year Campaign: Northern Colorado's first-ever Catholic high school, St. John Paul II High School, has launched its End-of-Year Campaign, Building a Beacon of Light. We invite you to please prayerfully consider giving.
