Networking Reception We have identified a total of 14 air-rail links that are currently Roundtable Discussions operational, under construction, or planned in Africa. Site Visits The AirRail Africa event will look at the success story of Gautrain, www.globalairrail.com major air-rail link projects in Africa and best practices from international airport rail link operators. AirRail events organised by the Global AirRail Alliance (GARA) are a great platform to discover, discuss and share these challenges with other air-rail operators from around the world. The events bring airports, rail operators, airlines, planners and suppliers to one central location, where ideas are shared and partnerships are formed. GARA runs an annual Global AirRail Conference and Awards and regional AirRail events, the most recent being the UK AirRail 2015 and AirRail Italia 2015 conferences. The global events are designed to look at air-rail projects happening around the world and share the common practices, whilst the regional events are designed to focus closely on specific issues for the regions, such as planning, legislation, passenger behaviour and, more importantly, local projects. The service links Johannesburg, Tshwane and OR Tambo international Airport. Gautrain’s Airport Service is Africa’s first and only air rail link extension offering a world class service on customer experience by being integrated into the airport terminal. The 8th of June will mark the system’s fifth year of operation. Trains run every 12 minutes during peak, and every 20 minutes during off-peak hours. An independent assessment of the economic impact of Gautrain has been completed and the results have shown that the Gautrain System has created 122,000 direct and indirect job opportunities during construction and 600 direct and indirect jobs after the start of operations. Gautrain has stimulated property development in areas around its stations. It is estimated that R46 billion total GDP impact has been added to the provincial economy due to property development induced by Gautrain, contributing a further 245,000 jobs. This system represents the combination of a modern city- centre underground rail with a pre-existing set of commuter rail lines. Within the city, the RER functions like a metro, but outside the city, the RER operates as an express train service. The airport station is situated at level -1 in the arrivals area of Terminal 1. Journey time is half an hour and costs 30 MAD (around 3 USD). The airport train station is located in Arrival zone (level -1). Trains depart and arrive every hour from 2:56 to 21:56.
