Brought to you by: Debbie Keehart, Chief Instructor AND HerHandgun! Debbie Keehart [email protected] MARCH, APRIL, MAY The Historians Pen CZ 52 Pistol Czechoslovakia was part of the Soviet bloc but in some instances chose to use their own designed weapons instead of the Russian versions. The Russians were using the Tokerav pistol in the 30 caliber bottleneck round. Czechoslovakia kept the round but used a pistol of their design. The designers were Jan and Jaroslav Kralochvil who designed this gun in 1952. It was produced from 1952 to 1954 with approximately 200,000 produced. The factory was the Ceska Zbrojovka located in Strakonice. It replaced the anemic Browning in 7.65 caliber, which drew many complaints due to its lack of power. It was in use from 1952 to 1982 when it was replaced by the much less powerful 9 X 18 Makarov, which was being used throughout the Soviet Empire. The cartridge is a 30-caliber bottleneck closely resembling the 30 Mauser round. Physically they are interchangeable but some of the Tokerav ammo is too hot for some of the older guns such as the 30 Broomhandle Mauser. It fires an 86 grain FMJ bullet at 1600 FPS which puts it in a category of high powered handguns. While it offers a lot of penetra- tion, stopping power is only fair as there is no expansion with that load. If you handload new Starling brass is available as is hollow point bullets which would make it more effec- tive. Most of the foreign military ammo is corrosive so keep that in mind if you use that ammo. It takes the same diameter bullet as the 30 Luger, which is .308 though the case is longer. The gun itself is a simple gun to operate and disassemble. The trigger is a single action and not excessively heavy while the sights are typical military with a notch rear and fixed blade front. It is a recoil operated roller locked on the order of a MG 42 machine gun. It isn’t a common design but is strong capable of using any ammo that is designed for it. The single stack magazine holds 8 rounds. The gun weighs 2 LBS. with a 4.7” barrel and to some it may appear awkward. The firing pin is brittle and dry firing may break it according to some reports. At one time they were very inexpensive to purchase and while the price has gone up they are still fairly reasonable. The price will go up because they have been out of production for 63 years and those in existence will wear out or break so there will be less guns available. At one time they offered a 9 mm barrel conversion which would enhance it utility but it was dropped a few years ago though you might find one at a gunshow. It has a manual safety so that a 9 th round can be carried in the cham- ber. Another interesting piece of history for those who collect C & R guns. The CZ 52 is well worth the modest investment.
