There has been an enormous increase in consumer awareness in recent years, from the ❱❱ sourcing of food to the conditions of workers in developing countries. This trend is putting businesses right in the spotlight as consumers want to know that producers are not being exploited. Ethical consumption is currently growing at a rate nearly eight times faster than the economy as a whole. Fairtrade sales have doubled year on year since 2003, and recognition of the Fairtrade Mark is higher than for any other consumer label at 70 per cent. What is Fairtrade? Fairtrade provides producers in developing countries with a fair price for their products ❱❱ plus a Fairtrade premium to invest in local community development. Fairtrade buyers enter into long-term contracts enabling investment and stable employment. The Fairtrade Mark guarantees employee welfare and high environmental standards. What are the benefi ts to us? You’ll get more customers. Corporate behaviour is under intense scrutiny by an ❱❱ increasingly discerning public who make ethical choices when spending their money. Integrating Fairtrade into your business by switching to Fairtrade purchasing is a highly effective way of showing your customers that you care. Switching to Fairtrade also adds a feel-good factor for staff. Offering Fairtrade products to your staff and customers is a great way to demonstrate that you are a caring business as it has high recognition and consumer confi dence. “Fairtrade fi ts very strongly into our commitment to our communities. As for our staff, with Fairtrade we offer them the choice to follow their ethics as well as satisfy their appetite.” Uzma Hamid, Corporate Social Responsibility manager at KPMG I want to switch to Fairtrade – what next? There are plenty of local and national suppliers listed in this brochure, or ask your current ❱❱ supplier if you are tied into a contract – most now have Fairtrade options. If you switch to Fairtrade, do let your local Fairtrade network know. Not only will they be sure to patronise your business, they may also have a free directory listing, certifi cate or sticker they can let you have.
