The Presidents Cup – 2013 Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio Day One – Results and Notes – October 3, 2013 DAY ONE – RESULTS Four-Ball Matches – United States 3.5, Internationals 2.5 Match 1 Jason Day/ Graham DeLaet (International) defeated Hunter Mahan/ Brandt Snedeker (U.S.), 1-up Match 2 Bill Haas/Webb Simpson (U.S.) halved with Adam Scott/ Hideki Matsuyama (International) Match 3 Louis Oosthuizen /Charl Schwartzel (Intl.) defeated Phil Mickelson/ Keegan Bradley (U.S.), 2 and 1 Match 4 Steve Stricker/ Jordan Spieth (U.S.) defeated Ernie Els/ Brendon de Jonge (International), 1-up Match 5 Matt Kuchar/Tiger Woods (U.S.) defeated Angel Cabrera/ Marc Leishman (International), 5 and 4 Match 6 Zach Johnson/ Jason Dufner (U.S.) defeated Branden Grace /Richard Sterne (International), 5 and 3 Note: Presidents Cup rookies (11) are in bold Day one matches were suspended due to a dangerous weather situation at 2:38 p.m. Play resumed at 4 p.m. It is the first weather delay at The Presidents Cup since 2007 at Royal Montreal when the start of the first round was delayed 30 minutes due to rain. The United States has led after the first day in seven of the 10 previous playings of the Presidents Cup. There are 11 players making their debut in The Presidents Cup, which is the most ever in the history of the event. There were 10 in 2003 and 2011. Each of the U.S. Team members has won on the PGA TOUR. Five of the International players have not won on the PGA TOUR (DeLaet, Matsuyama, de Jonge, Grace and Sterne). U.S. Team captain Fred Couples defeated International Team captain Nick Price 1-up in singles matches in the inaugural President Cup in 1994. Davis Love III and Couples also defeated Price and Bradley Hughes 1-up in foursome matches that year. These two matches are the only times the two played against each other in the Presidents Cup. International countries represented over the history of the Presidents Cup: 11 - Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Fiji, Japan, New Zealand, Paraguay, South Africa, South Korea, Zimbabwe The U.S. Team has 28 previous Presidents Cup appearances amongst its members, including three players who have won at Muirfield Village Golf Club, site of this year’s event (Matt Kuchar-2013, Steve Stricker-2011 and Tiger Woods-2012, 2009, 2001, 2000, 1999). For the International Team, those numbers are 17 and one (Ernie Els, 2004). Match 1 Jason Day/ Graham DeLaet (International) defeated Hunter Mahan/ Brandt Snedeker (U.S.), 1-up The United States has won six of the 10 opening matches in the history of the Presidents Cup. The International Team won the opening match today for the first time since 2005 when Adam Scott/Retief Goosen defeated Tiger Woods/Fred Couples, 4 and 3. The International team also won the open match in 2003 when Nick Price/Mike Weir defeated David Toms/Phil Mickelson, 1-up. The two teams tied that year at 17 points apiece. The only other time the International team won the first match of the event was in 1998 when Frank Nobilo/Greg Turner defeated Mark O’Meara/David Duval, 1 –up. That was the only year the International team won the Presidents Cup. DeLaet is the second player from Canada (Mike Weir) to qualify for The Presidents Cup. Snedeker and DeLaet made their first career starts in The Presidents Cup. Since the 2011 Presidents Cup, Mahan’s combined match-play record (The Presidents Cup and WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship) is 15-3-0. Mahan and Day matched up against each other twice in the 2011 Presidents Cup with Mahan’s side taking victory each time. Day is a member at Muirfield Village Golf Club and lives in the Columbus area. He is from Australia, where The Presidents Cup was held in 2011. Snedeker has five missed cuts and a WD in six starts in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village. Match 2 Bill Haas/Webb Simpson (U.S.) halved with Adam Scott/ Hideki Matsuyama (International) Scott has a losing record overall in the Presidents Cup, but is (5-4-2) in Four-Ball. Matsuyama has never played in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Match 3 Louis Oosthuizen /Charl Schwartzel (Intl.) defeated Phil Mickelson/ Keegan Bradley (U.S.), 2 and 1 Mickelson is the only player on either team to have competed in all 10 editions of The Presidents Cup. Mickelson and Bradley went 3-0 as partners at the 2012 Ryder Cup. Schwartzel was 3-1-1 in The Presidents Cup in 2011. Match 4 Steve Stricker/ Jordan Spieth (U.S.) defeated Ernie Els/ Brendon de Jonge (International), 1-up Spieth is the youngest U.S. player to participate in The Presidents Cup, selected by U.S. Team Captain Fred Couples as one of his two captain’s picks. Spieth is the only player on The U.S. Team to not play in a Ryder Cup. Stricker won the Memorial Tournment in 2011. Els (2004) is the only player on the International Team to win the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village GC. Match 5 Matt Kuchar/Tiger Woods (U.S.) defeated Angel Cabrera/ Marc Leishman (International), 5 and 4 Woods takes sole possession of the record for most matches won in The Presidents Cup. Below are the most Presidents Cup matches won: 21 Tiger Woods 20 Jim Furyk 18 Phil Mickelson 17 Ernie Els Woods (2012) and Kuchar (2013) are the last two winners of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Cabrera drops to 1-4-2 in four-ball matches. Match 6 Zach Johnson/ Jason Dufner (U.S.) defeated Branden Grace /Richard Sterne (International), 5 and 3 Johnson and Dufner went 2-1 as partners at the 2012 Ryder Cup. The Grace and Sterne pairing is the only one featuring two Presidents Cup rookies.
