ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNCIL (VARIOUS ROADS, PATCHWAY, DOWNEND, STAPLE HILL AND KINGSWOOD AREAS - BRISTOL CITY BOUNDARY) (20 MPH SPEED LIMIT) ORDER 201[-] S T A T E M E N T O F R E A S O N S Staple Hill / Soundwell / Kingswood / Hanham / Patchway area - Various roads that cross the boundary between Bristol City and South Gloucestershire: Proposed 20 miles per hour speed limit Background Bristol City Council are in the process of reducing the speed limit to 20 miles per hour in the majority of its residential streets for safety and environmental benefits. Due to the boundary between Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council, it is necessary for South Gloucestershire Council to implement a 20 miles per hour speed limit order on some roads that cross the boundary between the two authorities. Purpose of the Scheme The purpose of the scheme is to reduce traffic speed which makes walking, cycling and outdoor play become more attractive, all of which have a positive impact on health and the community. As well as increasing physical activity, these pursuits give a greater opportunity for social interaction. Proposed Scheme The proposed scheme is to reduce the speed limit from 30 miles per hour to 20 miles per hour on roads that cross the boundary with Bristol City Council and will include the following roads in the Staple Hill / Soundwell / Kingswood / Hanham / Patchway area: • Grace Road • Midland Road • Woodland Avenue • Overnhill Road • Howard Road • Woodland Way • Overnhill Court • Hayward Road • The Wickets • Lower Station Road • North View • Castle Road • Kensington Road • Portland Street • Gladstone Road • Upper Station Road • The Crescent • Seymour Road • Page Road • Mulberry Gardens • A section of Soundwell Road • Kendall Road • Gorse Hill • Cross Street • Kendall Gardens • The Close • Alsop Road • Southernhay • Leicester Square • Boultons Road • Acacia Avenue • Colston Street • Kennington Avenue • Portland Place • Whitfield Close • Polly Barnes Hill • The Elms • Colston Close • Maple Court • Phoenix Grove • Charlton Road • Charlton Common • Charlton Gardens • West Way • Fishpool Hill • Kingfisher Close The consultation and outline of the plans will be available on the council website at www.southglos.gov.uk/consultation .
