Our goal is to give you the best preparation possible for the Championships as well as to provide regular readers of WUOC News with a certain advantage. The Czech Team will not be missing. In the town of Přerov, just a few kilometres from the Championships‘ centre in Olomouc, lives one of the hopes of the home team. Vendula Horčičková is the current relay Junior World Champion. She would like to continue her success into the senior category. It‘s now been three months since you became Junior World Champion in the relay together with your teammates Kateřina Chromá and Lenka Knapová. How do you value this success now after some time has passed? It‘s still a great feeling from having completed a well-done job. The early euphoria has left and I‘ve been realising more and more that it‘s just a small step on my way to success in senior orienteering. Is it even possible to compare the Gold Medal from JWOC with your triumphs in the long distance and the relays from the European Youth Orienteering Championships? All these successes were just amazing for me at that time. They motivated me to train even harder and they moved my career one step further. On the other hand, the Gold Medal I won at JWOC 2013 is so far simply the biggest success I‘ve achieved. Are you satisfied with your performance in the individual competitions of JWOC 2013? I can‘t really be completely satisfied. My goal was to be in the top 10 in every race, which I always missed by a few seconds. Every race brought me a new bunch of experience that I would like to learn from in my future competitions. Do you have any new goal that you would like to achieve? My long-term goal is to become a runner who is able to get selected for the World Orienteering Championships. I am aware of a lot of hard work that is before me. What competitions are there still ahead of you this year? In autumn, the biggest race for me is unequivocally the Czech long distance and relay championships. I will also take part in some events of the Czech individual and relay cup. The World University Orienteering Championships will be held in the Czech Republic next year. What kind of challenge is it for you? Will you be aiming your training towards the Championships? To be honest, I don‘t really know what to expect from the senior category and what the possibility for my selection for the Championships is. I will definitely try to train as much as possible to be able to show myself in the best light possible so that the coaches of the national team can at least think about my selection. I would like to participate in the Championships not least as I could gain new experience there. If you could entice competitors with something special, what would it be? What can they look forward to in Olomouc? Olomouc itself is a very nice city and a part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The same is true about Kroměříž where the mixed relay race will be held. From an historical monuments point of view, there are definitely a lot of things that the competitors can look forward to. I believe that all the competition areas will be very interesting and that the organisers will prepare a great Championships that all the participants will remember, like the World Orienteering Championships 2008. What do you think about this terrain? Would you recommend s u some special kind of preparation for the participants? ug I am afraid that there is no universal piece of advice, as all the races will , A be held in different kinds of terrain. I would just like to recommend to all uc omo participants that they should prepare themselves for blackberries. Czech Republic, Ol Vendula Horčičková was born in 1993 in Přerov where she also graduated from high school in 2012. Nowadays, she studies Psychology at the Masaryk University in Brno. She has been competing for the club of Palacký University Olomouc since there is no orienteering club in her hometown. The biggest success of her career so far is the relay gold medal from the Junior World Orienteering Championships 2013. Vendula also won the gold from the European Youth Orienteering Championships 2009 long distance race as well as the relay gold medal from EYOC 2011. NEWS FROM THE ORGANISATION Dušan Vystavěl ORGANISING COMMITTEE ESTABLISHED The Organising Committee of the 19th World University Orienteering Championships 2014 in Olomouc was established at the end of April after months of preparation. The Czech University Sports Association (CAUS) handed the organisation over to the Central-Moravian Orienteering Association chaired by Mr. Jindřich Smička and Mr. Dušan Vystavěl. Mr. František Dvořák, the president of CAUS, and Mr. Dušan Vystavěl, the chairman of the Organising Committee of WUOC 2014 later confirmed this cooperation by their signatures during the official ceremony at the Faculty of Physical Culture of Palacký University in Olomouc, which will be the centre of the Championships. WUOC 2014 will be organised by approximately 150 organisers, most of them being volunteers. There will also be a training camp organised for young promising athletes, not only from the Czech Republic, who will be helping with the organisation of the Championships too. Their task will be to guard the controls at the sprint races and to accompany particular teams at the Opening Ceremony of WUOC 2014. SUCCESSFUL INSPECTION OF FISU AND IOF SUPERVISORS On the last weekend of the summer holidays, an inspectional visit of supervisors of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) was held. Mr. Julien Buhajezuk, FISU staff, Mr. Ola Kåberg, FISU Technical Delegate for Orienteering, as well as Mr. Juraj Petrinec, IOF delegate, were happy with the state of preparations. The visit was very helpful for the organisers too. The supervisors from the international federations were not only looking for mistakes, but they also gave the organisers valuable advice. Mr. Ola Kaberg and Mr. Juraj Petrinec checked the terrain themselves where the long distance race will be held. “The terrain is very well chosen and it fully suits to all the requirements of a long distance race. It’s altitude and runnability promise a race of the highest quality,” Mr. Ola Kåberg said. Mr. Juraj Petrinec also stated that “considering the hilly profile, the race will be very tough, but fair.” Mr. Julien Buhajezuk evaluated his part of inspection saying that “the accommodation and catering in the University Campus of Neředín in Olomouc meet all the requirements of this event.” The supervisors also acknowledged the possibility of organising a four-days training camp before the Championships. There is also the opportunity of training in relevant terrain on request at any time of the year. The new discipline of mixed relays will be part of the program of this Championships. On Sunday 10th of August 2014, there will be a test race designed as a duel between Europe and “the rest of the World” to be held before the actual Opening Ceremony of WUOC 2014. As an experienced Czech National Team runner I want to periodically present to you my advice and guidance. This section should help you and facilitate your “homework”. Get the right idea and adjust your technical and physical training! Tip no. 1 The terrain of the middle distance and relay race resembles the terrain of the JWOC 2013 relay race. You will find dense green wood with indestinct vegetation boundaries and many yellow clearings inside.
