Participants from mining and consulting companies in Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil completed the 5 weeks of classroom study on the theory and application of geostatistics, under the tutelage of Dr Clayton Deutsch from the University of Alberta, Canada. Professor Danie Krige died in March in Johannesburg. A pioneer in the field of geostatistics, his vision to perfect the prediction of mineral resources with sparse spatial data was recognised worldwide. French mathematician and geologist, Professor Georges Matheron named the most commonly used grade estimator in the mining industry after him. Professor Krige’s drive and passion set the direction for the development of many tools that are used today by mining companies and banks to assess natural resources. Maptek users benefit from Krige’s legacy, with geostatistics being an integral part of Maptek Vulcan mining software. An extensive set of grade estimation and modelling tools use engines derived from his initial work. Maptek pays tribute to Danie Krige, and remains committed to following his example in applying innovative techniques to solve challenges in mining.
