W. Talwalkar (1888 – 1982) (1902 – 1994) Inaugural Chairman Inaugural Secretary Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (December 25, 1861 – November 12, 1946) Born in an educated orthodox Hindu family at Prayag (Allahabad) in 1861, Madan Mohan Malaviya has been recognized as an outstanding and noble son of India. His multifaceted personality made him, at the same time, a great patriot, an educationist with a vision, a social reformer, an ardent journalist, reluctant but effective lawyer, a successful parliamentarian and an outstanding statesman. Among Malaviyaji’s many achievements, the most monumental was the establishment of the Banaras Hindu University or Kashi Hindu Vishwavidyalaya. In the course of his lifetime Banaras Hindu University came to be known as a Capital of Knowledge acknowledged across India and the world. Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya created history in Indian education with this institution – the first of its kind in the country. He chose Banaras as the site, because of the centuries old tradition of learning, wisdom and spirituality inherent to the place. His vision was to blend the best of Indian education called from the ancient centres of learning – Takshashila and Nalanda and other hallowed institutions, with the best tradition of modern universities of the west. Great minds and personalities like Annie Besant, Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Shyama Charan De and many others joined hand with him in his quest for knowledge, arousing the national spirit in India and winning freedom with the power of education and righteousness. Malaviya passed away in 1946. But his spirit still lives and there are many who bear the torch that he lit, many more stand ready to shoulder the mantle of his responsibility. To All Our Esteemed Members I welcome you all to the “little kingdom” of the Indian Ceramic Society. It is very pleasing for me that our organization has progressed significantly over the past few years due to the continuous love and support of all our dear members, whom I may proudly consider as the family members of this ceramic family. In the very beginning I, along with all my members of this ceramic family, deeply mourn the sad demises of following members during past two years and convey heartfelt condolences to the respective bereaved family: Mr S. Chakrabarti, Prof. B. N. Samaddar, Mr H. L. Somany, Dr V. C. S. Prasad, Mr Amal Kr Guha, Mr Nirmal Kr Guha, Dr V. N. Vaidya and Dr K. N. Maiti. At this juncture I feel the necessity of publishing yet another Membership Directory. This will help all our dear members to know each other intimately. Those who are new to our family will have a good chance of exchanging news and views with their seniors. During the last two years, we have made some progress in several fronts, which are outlined below: You would be glad to know that the quarterly journal of the Society, ‘Transactions of the Indian Ceramic Society’ (TICS) has been given an impact factor of 0.558 by Thomson Reuters in 2016. The list was released in the 3rd week of June, 2017. In the year 2017, the agreement regarding co-publication of ‘Transactions of the Indian Ceramic Society’ with Taylor & Francis (T&F), UK has been renewed with some revised terms and conditions. The 2nd International Conference on ‘Alumina and Other Functional Ceramics’ (AOFC-2017) was organized most successfully by the Indian Ceramic Society jointly with CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR-CGCRI), during February 15-17, 2017 at CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata. The keynote lecture was delivered by Mr Marcel Spreij from Almatis GmbH, Germany. Apart from key note lecture, 4 plenary lectures, 17 invited lectures, 11 contributed lectures and 33 poster papers were presented in 7 technical sessions. There was also an exhibition. Altogether 150 persons including speakers, session chairs, guests and delegates participated in the conference. I would like to report here that Ceramic & Glass Industry Foundation (CGIF), USA had sanctioned a grant to the Indian Ceramic Society (InCerS) for organizing “Awareness Workshops on Ceramics, Glasses and Allied Materials” among high school students across the country for sensitizing them to take Ceramic Technology subject as their future career. Two such workshops were organized by InCerS jointly with Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology (GCECT), Kolkata. The first one was held during July 07-08, 2017 at Kolkata, with active support from CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata, wherein a total number of 83 students from 8 (eight) schools in Kolkata participated. The first day included half day lecture session at CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata and half day laboratory visit at the same institute. In the second day, industry visit was organized at two leading industries at Rishra, Hooghly, WB. The second workshop was organized by InCerS Western UP Chapter with active support from CSIR-CGCRI, Khurja Centre including lecture session at Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI), New Delhi on 7th November, 2017 followed by industry visit at Khurja Pottery Cluster on 16th November, 2017. A total number of 130 students participated in the 2nd workshop. The membership strength has increased significantly during the last two years. A total of 258 new members have been enrolled since June, 2016. Here it is to be mentioned that a new category of student membership has been introduced from January 2018. Full time PhD students engaged in the study of ceramics and allied sciences are now also be eligible for student membership. You may notice that the website of the Society (www.incers.org) has been improved much and is updated regularly. Strong initiatives had been taken to create a user friendly and attractive design of InCerS’ website. The list of Long Term Corporate Members has been uploaded in the website. In our website, a ‘Job Portal’, has been created in the prime position of the home page. The members are requested to inform us about any job opportunity in any organization, whatever they have in their knowledge, to enable us to upload the same in the ‘Job Portal’ for the benefit of the members, especially the student members. We have also introduced ‘Online Registration’ for the Annual Session of the Society via our website. The members are requested to surf the pages for any information pertaining to the Society. We would appreciate receiving suggestions towards improvement of the website. I am glad to inform you that the financial picture of the Society now looks quite sustainable. Actions were taken to realize the dues of the advertisers, due subscriptions of the Corporate Members and Annual Members, etc, not just as a routine work, requests have also been made over phone to the defaulting members and through the Local Chapters. In addition, some activities have been undertaken like conductance of international conference by the parent body, collaboration with Taylor & Francis, UK, etc to generate resources in different forms. More people and organizations are now showing interest in the activities of the Indian Ceramic Society and provide financial resources in some forms and others. In this context, I would like to appreciate the continuous and active support rendered by all our advertisers, without which the financial strength of the Society could not have advanced progressively and be in its present position. It is to be mentioned here that our Society has now been registered under GST. I am very disappointed to state that the Delhi Chapter of the Indian Ceramic Society had become non-functional and the chapter had sent the entire amount lying in their bank as fixed deposit to the parent body of Indian Ceramic Society. Mr Shreekant Somany, President of the Society, put his best effort to revive the Delhi chapter. He tried to contact the prominent members from in and around Delhi, who could actually take the leadership to revive the Delhi chapter. It was very unfortunate that nobody from Delhi chapter showed any interest in this matter. The search for a suitable person to take responsibility in the restoration process is still going on. As advised by President, contribution received from the Delhi chapter had been put aside, which might be needed to revive the chapter. Finally, I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to all the members of our Society, without whose active co-operation it would not have been possible for the Secretariat to publish this new and updated version of the Membership Directory. I feel most privileged to thank all the advertisers who have contributed their best by way of giving advertisements in this directory. Thanks are also due to the secretarial staff members for their sincere effort as well as hard work in bringing out this directory in time. I proudly believe that all the members of our ceramic family will maintain their moral commitments which will help us scaling new heights in future. I once more request everybody to help us by providing latest contact details to enable us to insert matching corrigenda in the website and incorporate the same in the next directory to be published in 2020.
