Christ©s Divine Right to the Throne of David Ezekiel 21:25-27; Luke 1:31-33 Intro: Ezekiel is speaking to Zedekiah, of the seed of Coniah (Jehoiachin), who was on the throne of David, but without a divine right. (Jeremiah 22:24-30) I. God made a covenant and promise to David, that one of his descendants would rule as King upon his throne (hence, ªthrone of Davidº) Psalm 132:11, ªThe LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.º Isaiah 9:6-7, ªFor unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.º Jeremiah 23:5-6, ªBehold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.º II. He must be born the Seed of Abraham (Galatians 3:16) A. Both Matthew and Luke trace back to Abraham B. He must be of the seed of Israel (Romans 9:1-5) C. He must be of the Tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:10) Hebrews 7:14, ªFor it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Judah . .º [Revelation 5:5] Matthew 2:6, ªAnd thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.º [Micah 5:2] D. He must be of the Family of Jesse (Matthew 1:5, 6) Isaiah 11:1, ªAnd there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:º E. He must be of the seed of David (Romans 1:3) Not through Solomon, Coniah, and Joseph, but through Nathan and Mary ± the fact is, Christ has a double title to David©s throne III. He must be born of a virgin, the seed of woman (Gen 3:15) Isaiah 7:14, ªTherefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.º This produced the God-man, a sinless Seed, to die in our stead (2 Corinthians 5:21) IV. He must be raised from the dead, to sit on David©s Throne as King (Acts 2:30-31) Conclusion: He will re-build the ªtabernacle of Davidº Acts 15:13-17.
