Ralph Vaughan Williams 1872-1958 Words: John Mason Neale 1818-66 based on Aurora lucis rutilat - 1 - Greetings All remain standing. The Bishop and the people exchange greetings: Bishop Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Bishop There is one body and one spirit. All There is one hope to which we were called; Bishop one Lord, one faith, one baptism, All one God and Father of all. Bishop Peace be with you All and also with you. Introduction The Bishop introduces the ordination service: Bishop God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royal priesthood, a holy nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who has called us out of darkness into his marvellous light. The Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God and the dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit. In baptism the whole Church is summoned to witness to God’s love and to work for the coming of his kingdom. To serve this royal priesthood, God has given a variety of ministries. Priests are ordained to lead God’s people in the offering of praise and the proclamation of the gospel. They share with the Bishop in the oversight of the Church, delighting in its beauty and rejoicing in its well-being. They are to set the example of the Good Shepherd always before them as the pattern of their calling. With the Bishop and their fellow presbyters, they are to sustain the community of the - 2 - faithful by the ministry of word and sacrament, that we all may grow into the fullness of Christ and be a living sacrifice acceptable to God. Prayers of Penitence and Absolution All remain standing. Bishop As we stand together before God, and trusting in his grace alone, let us join with these ordinands in confessing our sins. All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us; forgive what we have been, amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Bishop Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive ✠ you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. All Amen. - 3 - Presentation of Priests People sit. The presenters, standing before the Bishop, present the ordinands. All Amen. - 6 - Liturgy of the Word All sit. Old Testament Reading Isaiah 6. 1-8 Reader A reading from the book of prophet Isaiah. In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.’ The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!’ Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’ Reader This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. Silence is kept. - 7 - Psalm Psalm 23 The Choir sings: 1. The Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing. 2. He shall feed me in a green pasture: and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.
