John J. Duncan Jr. of TN), To designate the bridge located in Blount County, Tennessee, on the Foothills Parkway (commonly known as "Bridge 2") as the "Dean Stone Bridge". November 7 & 8, 2017; 1324 Longworth House Office Building Summary of the Bill H.R. 3469, introduced by Representative John Duncan (R-TN-02) on July 27, 2017 renames a bridge located in Blount County, Tennessee, as the “Dean Stone Bridge.” Stone, a long-time newspaper editor and prominent Blount County citizen, was a lifelong advocate for Appalachia and the Great Smoky Mountains, passed away in 2016. Cosponsors None. Background Dean Stone was born in 1924 outside of Knoxville, Tennessee. A World War II veteran, Stone worked an astonishing 67 years with Blount County’s The Daily Times following the war, serving as the editor for nearly half of that time. A lifelong advocate for Blount County and the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains, Stone chaired the Source: Steve Ahillen, 'Duncan proposes naming Foothills Parkway bridge Tennessee Great Smoky Mountains Park after Stone' Commission for nearly 22 years, served as president of the Blount County Chamber of Commerce, and published eight books on the region. This bill proposes to name Bridge 2, an 800-foot engineering marvel, after Dean Stone. The bridge is located on the Foothills Parkway, a National Parkway that traverses the foothills near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Foothills Parkway is Tennessee’s oldest unfinished highway project, and Dean Stone was a tireless advocate for the project’s completion. 1 To quote the bill’s sponsor, John Duncan, “Dean Stone was one of the park’s strongest advocates for many, many years, and there was no stronger supporter of completing the Parkway than him.” Major Provisions Section 1- Designates the bridge as ‘Dean Stone Bridge’ Cost A Congressional Budget Office cost estimate has not yet been completed for this bill.
