WALLOON LAKE READS: The Nick Adams Stories SECTION 4 (April 22-28) Virtual Discussion: Thursday, April 29 Moderator: Jennifer Tianen A SOLDIER HOME ▪ Big Two-Hearted River ▪ The End of Something ▪ The Three Day Blow ▪ Summer People DISCUSSION POINTS ▪ Post war Hemingway in Petoskey ▪ Ernest Hemingway Memorial in Seney QUESTIONS FOR READERS ▪ “Big Two-Hearted River” offers the first glimpse of Nick after the war. On the surface, very little happens in the story. Is it a simple tale about Nick’s appreciation of nature’s beauty or is there greater meaning? ▪ How does Nick use nature and isolation to recuperate after his war injuries (physical, mental and emotional)? ▪ “The End of Something” is more than just a “break-up” story – what other conclusions can be identified? ▪ “The Three Day Blow” offers an anti-marriage theme, written in 1925 during Ernest’s first (of four) marriage to Hadley Richardson (whom he married in 1921 in Horton Bay). Was this a precursor to their 1927 divorce?
