Instructions As you read the job instructions, answer the questions and perform the tasks. Print your answers neatly and use complete sentences. Warning Before performing this job, review all pertinent safety information in the text and discuss safety procedures with your instructor. Procedures 1. Obtain a vehicle to be used in this job. Your instructor may specify one or more vehicles to be used. Locate the Vehicle Identifi cation Number (VIN), Emissions Certifi cation Label, and Refrigerant Identifi cation Label 1. Locate the vehicle identifi cation number (VIN). On all vehicles built after 1968, the VIN will be visible in the lower driver’s side corner of the windshield, Figure 2-1. On most vehicles built before 1968, the VIN will be located in the driver’s side front door jamb, Figure 2-2. Open the vehicle hood or engine compartment cover and locate the vehicle’s emissions certifi cation label, Figure 2-3. 3. Answer the following questions: What is the recommended spark plug gap? _______________ Can the ignition timing be adjusted? Yes ___ No ___ If Yes, what is the recommended base ignition timing? __________________________________ Is other service information listed on the label? Yes ___ No ___ If Yes, summarize the additional information: _________________________________________ Note If the vehicle is not equipped with air conditioning, skip the following step. Also, some older air-conditioned vehicles may not have a refrigerant identifi cation label. 4. Return to the engine compartment and locate the refrigerant identifi cation label, Figure 2-4. The refrigerant identifi cation label may be on an air conditioner component or on the inner fender or strut housing. What type of refrigerant is used in this vehicle?________________________________________ Figure 2-3. Not all vehicles will have the same labels. Typical labels may be called calibration labels, safety certifi cation labels, or vehicle service parts labels. Needed information may be included in the certifi cation label rather than on separate labels. 5. Locate all of the vehicle identifi cation labels on the vehicle. Labels may be found on the passenger-side door or door pillar, under the vehicle hood, on the underside of the vehicle trunk lid, the tailgate of a station wagon, and on the spare tire cover.
