Day 1: 04 November 2018 - Campo Grande – Pousada Aguape (195 km/121 mi./3 hrs) Today, transfer around 13:30 from your hotel or Campo Grande International Airport by an English speaking guide. Drive overland to Pousada Aguape, located in the beginning of Brazil’s Pantanal. The first 140 km/86 miles will be on the paved roads with a comfort stop after 120 km/74 miles in Aquidauana. The last 55km/34 miles, while entering the Pantanal, will be on dirt roads. You will have a reasonably good chance to spot your first giant anteater before reaching the lodge. Check in to the lodge and explore the lodge’s surroundings. Time permitting, join a late afternoon safari operated in a 4x4 open vehicle. This tour covers much of the territory of the farm visiting different landscapes like cerrado (patches of stunted vegetation), open grasslands, “vazantes” (low-lying areas that are often seasonally flooded), “brejos” (swamps) and bays which are permanently flooded areas. You may have the opportunity to see giant anteater, capibaras, armadillo, southern tamandua, rhea, hyacinth macaws, brocked deer, and seriema. Explore further after dark and search for the crab eating fox, caimans, owls and with a bit of luck spot a ocelot or puma. Return to the lodge for late dinner and the rest of the evening at leisure. (L,D) Afternoon+evening safari: duration 3 hrs / distance 40 km/25 miles. This is an excellent way to get to know the river habitat and the beauty and exuberance of its gallery forest. During this time you most likely will see kingfishers, herons, howler monkeys, giant river otters, capibara and caimans. Return to the lodge around 10:00. After lunch board a small airplane, Cessna 206 // 210 or a Piper Arrow for an unforgettable flight over the wetlands of the Pantanal to our next destination, the remotely located Fazenda Baia das Pedras. This flight, of approximately 30 minutes, will give you a wonderful idea of the Pantanal habitat, its forested islands of trees, lagoons, lakes and channels, and the scattered farmsteads built on the highest ground to avoid the annual flooding. Often one can spot tapir, capybara, flocks of birds and other animals while you fly above the flat Pantanal. Arrive to the lodge and check-in. In the late afternoon enjoy a hike in the vicinity of the farm and in the woods, with typical vegetation of the Pantanal: ridges (cordilleras), woods (capões), flood plains and savanna environments that shelter animals and plants in the region. Here you will have a chance to see jaburu stork, macaws, toucans, armadillo, and hummingbirds. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. (B,L,D).
