Creating html Files on a Mac BEFORE you create a file, follow these steps: 1. Open TextEdit 2. Click on the TextEdit Menu and choose “Preferences” 3. Under the Format section check Plain Text 4. Click on the “Open and Save” tab at the top of the “Preferences” box a. Under “When Saving a File” make sure to select “Display HTML files as HTML code instead of formatted text” (this allows you to edit your code in the future in the TextEdit program – otherwise each time you open the file it looks like it does in the browser and you can’t see the tags) b. And make sure “Add ‘.txt’ extension to plain text files” is NOT checked. **AFTER you create your file, name the file and add “.htm” to the end of the name. Ex. Mypage.htm If you don’t add the .htm to the file name, the page WON’T display in browser. IMAGES In order for images to appear, check the following things: 1. Image is saved in same folder location as html file OR the full path name is given for the src location. a. Example for image in same folder: <img src = “dog.jpg” alt=”brown dog”/> b. Example for image NOT in same folder: <imb src=”users/shelly/documents/dog.jpg” alt=”brown dog”/> 2. Smartquotes are turned off a. Step One Click the Apple icon at the top left of your screen and choose System Preferences... Step Two Choose Keyboard from the System Preferences menu. Step Three Click to select the Text tab from the Keyboard window. Step Four Uncheck Use smart quotes and dashes. b. Also check here: i. Click on TextEdit menu ii. Click on New Document iii. Make sure Smart quotes in NOT checked c. Also check: i. Click on Edit menu ii. Click on Substitutions iii. Make sure Smart Quotes in NOT checked .
