Transportation We advise the use of google maps to determine estimated time arrival to destination. Make sure to always provide more time as Thailand’s roads are highly congested. Peak Hours are 7:30 to 9:30 in the morning and 5 to 7:30 in the evening. Below is a guide to Thailand’s traffic: https://travelhappy.info/what-you-need-to-know-about-bangkok-traffic/ From Airport to Your Destination: Participants should make their own transportation arrangements from Suvarnabhumi Airport or Donmuang International Airport to their respective hotels. Limousine, metered-taxi and bus services are readily available at the airport. Detailed information about the airports can be found at https://airportthai.co.th/en/. Limousines: It is strongly recommended that participants contact only the authorized officials at the counters located in the airport arrival zone. These officials will issue a ticket for the assignment of a limousine for transporting passengers to the desired destination, upon request. The Suvarnabhumi International Airport limousine service counters are located on Level 2 at Baggage Claim and Arrival Hall exits, channels A, B and C. Taxi Services: For public taxi, participants are advised to proceed to Level 1 of the Passenger Terminal, between exit doors 4 and 7, outdoor area, where they will find automatic dispensing machines from which they can collect a queuing ticket for a public taxi. In addition to toll fees, there is a 50 Baht surcharge to be added to the meter charge from the airport to the city. Please refer to the airport website noted above for details. From Hotels to UNESCAP: APTTS will provide free shuttles only for participants staying in Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel and Grand Centre Point Hotel to the UNESCAP complex. BTS Skytrains: Skytrain with routes that cover nearly all of Bangkok. Very convenient, low-priced, and fast considering Thailand’s bad traffic. Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel: 2 min. walk to Ratchadamri BTS station Grande Centre Point Ratchadamri: 7 min. walk to Ratchadamri BTS station 6 Airport Link: http://www.bangkok.com/airport-rail-link.htm From Suvarnabhumi International Airport (Makkasan Station) with stops until Phaya Thai station in central Bangkok. It is very convenient and low-priced. Taxi Service Taxis in Bangkok are of bright colors - green, yellow, pink, etc. This does not signify anything just that they are of different companies. Fares and features are the same. Available taxis are the ones with a glowing red vacant sign “วา่ ง”. Taxis will always have meters. If the driver refuses to use a meter or the meter changes in a rapid manner, this might indicate a suspicious agenda. If the taxi driver insists on giving you a fixed fare, instead of using a meter, it’s best to find another taxi. Meters start at 35 Baht and go up around 2 baht at a time (roughly per kilometer). The passenger must pay for highways and expressway tolls. The price should not exceed 100 baht. Since many taxi drivers do not speak fluent English, it is recommended to show the taxi driver your destination on Google Maps. Be careful of motorcycles when you step out of your taxi. Some drivers may refuse to take you as a passenger mostly because they need to return the hired cab before a certain time. You do not need to tip a taxi driver. General Information Travel Advisory Visitors are advised to be respectful of Thai customs at all times. Please note that Thailand has laws against making negative comments about the institution of the monarchy. Such laws are strictly enforced and are applicable to spoken, written, gestures and electronic communication, including social media. Foreign currency Declaration The currency in Thailand is called the Thai Baht. Currency exchange facilities are available at the hotels and all over Bangkok. Such services are also available at the Siam Commercial Bank, United Nations Branch, which is located on the first floor of the Service Building (telephone extension 2168). The Bank is open from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, with no lunch break, from Monday to Friday. Electric Plug and Socket The electric power in Thailand is 220V running at 50Hz and the plug types used are either type A, type B, or type C. In case of need, adapters can be purchased from shops in the city dealing in electronic and electrical items. 7 Type A Type B Type C Hybrid Socket Meals Most meals during the APTTS are provided (please see the schedule for details). Catering services are also available at the following locations within the UNCC: ● Cafeteria, which serves Thai and international lunch, located on level 1 of UNCC, is open from 11 am to 2 pm for lunch on Monday through Friday. ● Canteen, which serves Thai lunch, located on the ground floor of the Service Building, is open from 7 am to 1 pm on Monday through Friday. ● Coffee Corner, which serves sandwiches, pastries, coffee, tea and soft drinks, located on level 1, UNCC, is open from 7 am to 5 pm. ● Rajapruek Lounge, which serves light meals and beverages, located on the ground floor of the UNCC, is open from 7 am to 5 pm on Monday through Thursday, and from 7 am to 8 pm on Friday. From 01 October 2018, the single-use cups are no longer available within the UN compound in Bangkok. A deposit of 100 Baht fee will apply on top of the cost of drink, which will be returned once the cup is brought back. Participants could also bring their own reusable cup to buy a drink and get a stamp. After 9 stamps, a free drink will be offered. Wireless Internet Wireless Internet is provided at all meeting venues. Details are provided on-site. Languages at the Summit All sessions will be conducted in English only.
