July 22, 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time 6X8KXX parish code Video Overview: We are lost in the dense jungle of this world and are made for heaven. We all long to get there, but we encounter so many needs along the way. If we aren’t careful, searching to fill those needs can replace our true com- pass. Instead of focusing on searching for home, we can be consumed by never being hungry, cold, or lonely. When that happens, we end up living a life full of the shells of the things we are made for. Our true hunger and loneliness can’t be filled by this world. But God hasn’t left us alone in this jungle – he sent us his only Son to lead us home to him. Jesus is our true compass. He is our Good Shepherd. He is the way, the truth, and the life. Featured Study: Saved in Hope, by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Love and hope are closely related in the spiritual life. Love of God involves hope or trust in God. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “The virtue of hope re- sponds to the aspiration to happiness which God has placed in the heart of every man.” Hope enables us to look to the next life, but it also inspires and purifies our actions in this life. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI considers modern philosophies and the challenges of faith today in light of the virtue of hope. Topics of Interest: Evangelization and Catechesis should be defined well so that we understand our role as Christian leaders. Evangelization must include a moment when we explicitly proclaim the Gospel with a call to conversion and then Catechesis educates beyond that first moment. In many churches, there has been a lot of catechesis without actu- ally evangelizing the parishioners, especially our children who have not had a conversion moment when they’ve said “no” to the world and “yes” to Christ. If we never look for moments to invite them into relationship with Jesus, can the teaching truly take hold?
