Although the area is part of the Eastern Kentucky Coal Fields Region, the topography is not as rugged as that of the counties to the south. The two counties cover a total land area of 508 square miles. Boyd County had a 198^ estimated population of 5^,770, Two incorporated cities, Ashland and Catlettsburg, are located in Boyd County. Greenup County had a 198^* estimated population of 38,649. Eight incorporated cities are located in Greenup County. The cities are Bellefonte, Flatwoods, Greenup, Raceland, Russell, South Shore, Worthingthon, and Wurtland. Ashland is located 67 miles west of Charleston, West Virginia; 162 miles southeast of Cincinnati, Ohio; 190 miles east of Louisville, Kentucky; and 281 miles northeast of Knoxville, Tennessee. The Economic Framework - The total number of Boyd and Greenup County residents employed in 1984 averaged 31,270, with nonagricultural jobs accounting for 30,850 workers. Manufacturing firms in the county reported 10,100 employees; wholesale and retail trade provided 6,450 jobs; 4,420 people were employed in service occupations; state and local government accounted for 3,170 employees; and contract construction firms provided 1,278 jobs.
