Dressmaking Techniques – All Abilities 2020 / 2021 Course Code Q3593 Tutor Mrs Jane Bradley BA Venue University College Isle of Man Cost £338 Start Day, Date & Time Friday 2nd October 2020 9.30am – 12.30pm Number of Weeks / Sessions 18 Weeks What is the course about? Learn or improve existing dressmaking skills, and construction techniques. Course covers following and adjusting a pattern, making a toile and professionally finishing garments. Advice given on dressmaking patterns and fabric choice. The first 9 weeks of the course we will be making a skirt, focusing on inserting zips, invisible hems, lining and waistbands. The 9 weeks after Christmas we will be making a simple basic top, insert sleeves insert facings, under stitch and sew neat seams. The course will give you the confidence to accurately follow and adjust a paper dressmaking pattern, in order to make a well-fitting garment. Decode dressmaker's jargon and symbols on a dressmaker’s patterns and how to handle different fabrics. Previous experience: All abilities welcome. Equipment you need to bring: Sewing machines available but you can bring your own. Fabric scissors and snips, Hand sewing needles, Stitch unpicker, Dressmaker’s carbon paper & tracing wheel (I recommend Burda) Basic sewing kit, thread, 30cm ruler, tailors chalk, tape measure, pins Selection of calico or suitable fabric to make toiles Pack of dressmaking tracing paper A paper pattern to suit your technical ability, and suitable fabric. C O U R S E P R O F I L E Extra costs: Paper dressmaking pattern Your own fabrics - Calico General Information: The times advertised for courses, especially 1-day and short courses, will normally include break(s) and a lunch period, as appropriate, and by agreement with the tutor at the sessions. Students attending one-day workshops might like to note that there are hot/cold drinks and snack vending machines (crisps, sweets, chocolate, biscuits etc) in the College Refectory, which will be open during the day, but there are no sandwiches etc available, so students might like to bring a packed lunch with them, which can be consumed in the Refectory. Some venues may have restricted parking facilities, disc parking etc, so please also be aware of this. Who should I contact?
