Lot Limit Estimation 1 LARGE SHIVA NATARAJA 300 € 500 € Bronze India, 19th century Dimensions: 37 cm by 30 cm Weight: 5.775 grams Shiva is a principal deity of Hinduism and Nataraja is the depiction of Shiva as the divine dancer and often a symbol of Indian culture and a popular motive in Hindu art. The translation is "lord/king of the dance". Here it is a rectangular, multi­stepped hollow base with various decorations topped by a round beaded rim. The God of Destruction is trampling on the dwarf called Apasmara purusha, symbol of evil and ignorance, the left leg is tilted up in an ecstatic movement. His right hand to the front is showing the abhaya mudra, gesture of fearlessness and has a snake curled around the arm, while the other hand is pointing at the left foot and symbolizes the refuge for troubled ones. The right raised hand is holding his attribute the damaru drum and the left hand is holding the fire agni, the forces of creation and destruction. The strands expanding from the back of his hand signify the river Ganga. The cosmic dance is set in a three­banded halo of floral decorations, waves and flames. Shiva is wearing a high crown, a short dhoti and jewellery on his whole body. He is standing with the right foot on the prostrate dwarf Apasmara purusha (standing for spiritual ignorance) which must be subdued but not killed, as it would lead to attainment of knowledge without the necessary effort. The left foot is lifted and pointed at with Shiva's left hand and according to various historical texts can either symbolize the refuge for troubled souls or liberation and release in contrast to the grip of the right foot. The right hand with the coiled snake around the arm shows the abhaya mudra, the raised right hand is holding the ritual drum, the left raised hand is holding the fire agni. A scarf is billowing around the deity's body and the holy river Ganges is depicted by the strands expanding from the back of his head. The expression is stern and a crown with the seven­headed serpent Naga as protective shield sits on the head. He is seated on a lotus flower on a rectangular throne with inscriptions on the front and back, his legs are crossed at the ankles. Narasimha has four arms holding attributes linked to Vishnu. The body is adorned with jewellery and he is wearing a five­pointed tiara. The dhoti he is wearing has incisions of a delicate ornamental pattern. The base is hollow. He is a fierce avatar of the Hindu god. 4BALA KRISHNA 300 € 500 € BALA KRISHNA Bronze India , 17th century Dimensions: Height 10 cm by 6 cm Weight: 219 grams Bala Krishna means literally "Baby Krishna" and is a popular motive in Hindu art, either depicted crawling on hands and knees or dancing with a ball of butter in his hand, like here. He is standing one­legged on a round lotus base, a lotus flower bud is growing next to his left foot while the right foot is lifted in motion, balancing with his left hand to the side. The face is tilted upwards in playful joy, the hair done up in a bun fastened by a hairband. He is seated in lotus pose with both his hands raised in abhaya mudra, one is holding a rosary. He is wearing a striped dhoti and necklaces. His face is tilted upwards with opened eyes and a pointy beard. In her most important manifestation, the Hindu Goddess is known as Durga. Generally, she is depicted in combat with a demi­god called Mahishasura, which also means „buffalo demon“.
