LADB Article Id: 057578 ISSN: 1060-4189 Chile: Eduardo Frei Chosen As "concertation For Democracy" Candidate by Erika Harding Category/Department: General Published: Friday, June 4, 1993 Eduardo Frei Ruiz Tagle was chosen as the presidential candidate for the ruling Concertation for Democracy coalition in a convention held May 30. Frei, president of the Christian Democrat Party (Partdio Democrata Cristiano, PDC), had previously received about 63% of the votes in the coalition's pre-convention primary, held May 23. The other leading contender for the Concertation nomination was Socialist Party leader Ricardo Lagos, who received approximately 37% of the vote in the May 23 primary. Following news of the primary results, Lagos announced his support of Frei's candidacy and called on all his supporters to vote for Frei in Chile's presidential elections, scheduled for Dec. 11. In a speech, Frei said that if elected one of his main objectives would be to "perfect Chilean democracy by putting an end to the system of appointed senators, instituting civilian control over appointment of armed forces commanders, reforming the judicial system, initiating the direct election of mayors, and decentralizing the state."
