Incidentally, this is also the ®S®e A¡¢j AaÉ¿¹ A¡e¢¾caz fÐp‰yax E®õM Ll¡ ®k®a first census of the new millennium. f¡®l ®k e§ae na¡ë£l HV¡C fÐbj A¡cjöj¡l£z öj¡l£ pwœ²¡¿¹ HC fСb¢jL ¢l®f¡®VÑ S¡a£u, As I understand, this Preliminary Report containing data on ¢hi¡N£u Hhw ®Sm¡ fkÑ¡®u M¡e¡l pwMÉ¡ Hhw ¢m‰y ®i®c number of households and population by sex, has been ®m¡L pwMÉ¡ fÐc¡e Ll¡ q®u®Rz öj¡l£ fÐnÀf®œl p¡®b prepared on the basis of the summary results prepared by the local level enumerators on the tally sheets provided with the fÐcš V¡¢m n£®V ÙÛ¡e£u NZe¡L¡l£ LaªÑL NZe¡Lªa pwMÉ¡l Census Questionnaires. The final report will be published ¢i¢š®a HC ¢l®f¡VÑ fÐZ£a q®u®Rz flha£Ñ®a LÇf¤ÉV¡l later after completion of mechanical processing using the J A¡d¤¢eL fÐk¤¢š² hÉhq¡l L®l Q§s¡¿¹ ¢l®f¡VÑ fÐZue Ll¡ latest computing technology and will provide detailed and q®h Hhw Eq¡®a Nªq, M¡e¡, ®m¡L pwMÉ¡ J ay¡®cl A¡bÑ- extensive data relating to households and housing, population p¡j¡¢SL Hhw ®X®j¡NË¡¢gL °h¢nù¡hm£ ¢hÙ¹¡¢lai¡®h fÐc¡e and their socio-economic, demographic and other Ll¡ q®hz I pjÙ¹ abÉ¡hm£ S¡a£u Hhw AeÉ¡eÉ characteristics at national, district and other lower fÐn¡p¢eL fkÑ¡®u ¢hi¡Se L®l ®cM¡®e¡ q®hz administrative levels. The main h¡wm¡®c®nl AiÉ¿¹®l pLm Nªq J SepwMÉ¡ pwœ²¡¿¹ abÉ¡¢c pwNËq objectives of the census were to enumerate all the households Ll¡C H öj¡l£l fÐd¡e E®ŸnÉz and the people in the country at a point of time. S¡a£u f¢lpwMÉ¡e L¡E¢¾p®ml ¢pÜ¡¿¹ Ae¤k¡u£ öj¡l£l As per decision of the National Statistical Council (NSC), the pjNË L¡kÑÉ¡hm£ ¢ae¢V fkÑÉ¡®u pj¡ç Llh¡l f¢lLÒfe¡ Ll¡ quz entire census work was planned to be executed in three phases. fÐbj fkÑÉ¡®u abÉ d¡l®Zl SeÉ J. Hj. A¡l hÉ¡hq¡l Ef®k¡N£ In Phase I, basic information of all households and individual pw¢rç fÐnÀf®œl j¡dÉ®j pLm M¡e¡ J Se pwMÉ¡l ®j±¢mL abÉ¡hm£ persons would be collected using a short questionnaire pwNËq Ll¡; ¢àa£u fkÑÉ¡®u ej¤e¡ Sl£®fl j¡dÉ®j f§ZÑ NZe¡l designed for data capture through Optical Mark Reader Li¡®lS J …ZNa j¡e k¡Q¡C Ll¡; Hhw aªa£u fkÑÉ¡®u Nªq, M¡e¡, (OMR) and Optical Character Reader(OCR). In Phase 2, a SepwMÉ¡ Hhw ay¡q¡®cl ®X®j¡NË¡¢gL °h¢nù¡hm£l Efl ¢hÙ¹¡¢la abÉ Post Enumeration Check (PEC) survey would be conducted pwNËq Ll¡z Ef®l¡š² ¢ae¢V fkÑÉ¡®ul fÐbj c¤¢Vl j¡W fkÑÉ¡®ul L¡S for evaluation of the quality and extent of coverage of the C¢aj®dÉ pj¡ç q®u®Rz aªa£u Hhw ®no fkÑÉ¡®ul L¡S 2001 main census. Finally, in Phase 3, a Sample Census would be p¡®ml e®iðl j¡®p pj¡ç q®h h®m A¡n¡ Ll¡ k¡uz conducted for collecting detailed information on housing, households, population and their demographic characteristics. While the field work relating to Phase 1 and 2 has been completed, the work relating to Phase 3 is expected to be completed by November, 2001. h¡wm¡®cn f¢lpwMÉ¡e h¤É®l¡®L öj¡l£ pwœ²¡¿¹ ¢h¢iæ A Standing Technical Committee comprising of well known ¢ho®u p¤f¡¢ln fÐZu®el SeÉ ¢h¢iæ ®fn¡u ¢e®u¡¢Sa ®c®nl experts in various disciplines was formed to advise the MÉ¡ae¡j¡ ¢h®no‘N®Zl pjeÄ®u HL¢V øÉ¡e¢Xw ®VL¢eLÉ¡m L¢j¢V Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics on various matters relating to NWe Ll¡ quz h¡wm¡®cn f¢lpwMÉ¡e h¤É®l¡ LaªÑL A¡®u¡¢Sa c¤’¢V the Census. Two Seminars were organized by Bangladesh ®p¢je¡®l abÉ hÉhq¡lL¡l£ Hhw ¢h®no‘NZ ¢h¢iæ ¢ho®u ja¡ja Bureau of Statistics in which various users of census data and fÐc¡e L®lez a®bÉl fЮu¡Se£ua¡, Li¡®lS Hhw EfÙÛ¡f®el Efl experts participated and exchanged their views regarding data Ae¤¢ùa I c¤’¢V ®p¢je¡®l ¢h®no‘N®Zl ja¡ja, ¢fÐ-®Vø Hhw requirement, coverage and presentation. The census questionnaire øÉ¡e¢Xw ®VL¢eLÉ¡m L¢j¢Vl p¤f¡¢l®nl ¢i¢š®a öj¡l£ fÐnÀfœ °al£ was framed after due consideration of the recommendations of Ll¡ quz the Standing Technical Committee, results of pre-tests and the consensus developed in the Seminars. abÉ d¡l®Zl SeÉ J. Hj. A¡l fÐnÀfœ¢V HL¢V jX¤Ém¡l The Census Questionnaire designed for data capture through gl®j NWe Ll¡ quz H®a Nªq J M¡e¡ pwœ²¡¿¹ 16¢V fÐnÀ Hhw Optical Mark Reading equipment, was structured in a modular fЮaÉL hÉ¢š²l SeÉ 12¢V fÐnÀ A¿¹i§Ñš² ¢Rmz pw®n¡¢da ¢X-®g®ƒ¡ form having 16 questions on housing and household fÜ¢a®a j¡W fkÑÉ¡®ul NZe¡ L¡S Ll¡ qu Hhw ace¤p¡®l 22®n characteristics and 12 questions for individual members. In S¡e¤u¡l£ ¢ch¡Na l¡®œ (öj¡l£ l¡œ) LjÑla ®m¡LSe hÉa£a i¡pj¡e field operation modified de-facto procedure was adopted for ®m¡Lpq AeÉ pLm®L ®k ®kM¡®e ¢R®me, ay¡®L ®pM¡®eC NZe¡ Ll¡ enumeration. Except for persons engaged in night duty, quz g®m H öj¡l£l j¡dÉ®j öj¡l£ l¡®œ h¡wm¡®c®nl M¡e¡, SepwMÉ¡ everybody, including the floating population, was counted Hhw ay¡®cl °h¢nø pð®å S¡e®a f¡¢lz where he/she had been found during the Census Night i.e.
