THE 20-GHOST CLUB LIMITED Registered Number 5224632 The Oldest Rolls-Royce Car Club in the World Website: www.20-ghost.org A midweek tour of The English Lakes, in Cumbria from Tuesday 22nd September 2015 departing Friday morning 25th September 2015. The accommodation for this mid week event is based at the Lakeside Hotel and Spa, Lake Windermere, Newby Bridge, Cumbria LA12 8AT, Phone Number 015395 30001. The Hotel is at the south eastern end of the Lake and is well rated on trip advisor with excellent reviews. The Double Premium rooms with en suite (shower over the Bath) have Queen Beds of which a small number can be reserved with a twin bed configuration. A Private car park will be allocated for the duration of our stay so that our cars can be hidden from the main carpark which is exposed to the general public. Should you wish to upgrade your accommodation to a Terrace Room or a Suite all of which have king sized beds this will attract an additional supplement and should be arranged directly with the Hotel. The tour starts with those arriving from the South exiting the M6 at junction 36 taking the signs for Grange over Sands or arriving via the A6 leaving that road by joining the A590 again taking signs for Grange over Sands. On this route is the National Trust property of Sizergh Castle, the delightful town of Grange over Sands and the Lakeland Motor Museum. Those approaching from the north can either come down the A6 or M6 joining as described above or by taking a more scenic route leaving the M6 or the A6 at Penrith. This route takes you past Ullswater, through the village of Glenridding, down the Kirkstone Pass turning right to Pooley Bridge and Ambleside. The navigation continues down the west side of Windermere to the Hotel. A full detailed route will be emailed to all participants so that the approach to the hotel can be made without stress. Dinner on the arrival night will be in the main Dining room which is a two Rosette Fine Dining Restaurant. A route has been prepared for each day with many options and short cuts. So if you prefer a more leisurely approach there need not be any rules or deadlines with the exception of the Evening Dinner. The Hotel has a superb Spa and a beautiful Pool which may appeal. Wednesday 23rd September Today’s route has been chosen for it’s stunning scenery and is about 65 miles long. The easiest way being to drive south, to clear the bottom of the Lake and then north up through Bowness and Windemere leaving in the direction of Ulswater and from there to Keswick. Depending on the time taken you may wish to visit William Wordsworth’s House and Garden. Wordsworth was born in the House in April 1770 where he lived with his family during his childhood years. The Home is run by the National Trust, the location being in The Main Street, Cockermouth. © John If Driving is your preference there is the option for those who want a more challenging drive to circumnavigate the Derwent and Buttermere fells, but this will add a further 25miles of tight twisting roads as well as the renowned Honister Pass. The return from Keswick is past Thirlmere, Grassmere and Rydal Water before reaching Ambleside. Ambleside is worthy of a short stop before returning to the Hotel using the roads on the west of Lake Windermere. After a pleasant day we have arranged a complementary Afternoon Tea to be served in the Hotel’s Conservatory before dinner, in the Brasserie, a slightly less formal approach than experienced in the Main restaurant. Thursday 24th September. Thursday’s route has been listed in both a clockwise and an anti clockwise direction so that it caters for sight seeing and or the toughest pass in the Lakes. The sightseers route is to Hawkshead for the Beatrix Potter enthusiasts and then on to Coniston Water where the National Trust operate a Steam Gondola. Brantwood is close to this lake and a must for John Ruskin entrusts. The route leaves Coniston taking a south-westerly direction before swinging north to Dalgarth for a possible trip down to Ravenglass on the Narrow Gauge Railway. Time permitting the way home is via the Hardknott Pass and the Wrynose pass before returning to the Hotel via Skelwith Bridge and the B5288. Please note that this is a tough pass and should only be undertaken knowing that both the car and driver are in sound condition! In this direction the steepest gradient can be avoided by a short cut between the two passes exiting on the right. If your main interest is the Challenge of the toughest Passes as described above and you are looking for a driving experience, reminiscent of 2013 Alpine then this is the route is for you. The chosen passes are the Hardknott and Wrynose. They are best tackled by an early start so that the cars are on the pass before the masses arrive. If the conditions are found too arduous there is a middle exit road off the mountain which cuts out the second pass. On completing the passes where better to go, than back further in time, by taking a return trip on the Eskdale to Ravenglass Railway, you do not need to do the whole route to experience the magic. The return journey to the Hotel is via Coniston Water. This evening we have organised a 1 hour cruise on a traditional timber built Windermere Launch. Whilst aboard out trip will include complementary Canapé’s. There will be a pay bar for any drinks required. A Gala Dinner has been arranged for our official final night in the Fine Dining restaurant. As the Hotel usually achieves 100% occupancy during September to be sure of a place we have to confirm our booking by early March. The same applies to those who wish to extend their stay, like ourselves who will be arriving on Monday and departing on the Saturday. The Hotel have offered us the same daily rate for either side of the mid week price so if you wish to extend your accommodation dates please complete the additional information. For those departing on Friday you may wish to consider visiting Holker Hall which is open as well as the beautiful ancient village of Cartmel when the Priory Church is celebrating it’s involvement with the Magna Carta of 1215.
