WETSTHPOER TN, CEOWUN TYYO MUAYO The charming town of Westport is situated on the shores of Clew Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, on the West coast of Ireland. Westport is one of the few architecturally planned towns in Ireland, designed by James Wyatt, a well-known architect of the Georgian Period. The colorful town offers an attractive selection of specialty craft and woolen shops, traditional pubs with live music and an award-winning restaurant scene. Westport’s most picturesque feature is the tree-lined and flower filled promenade featuring stone bridges that cross the river Carrow Beg. The area is famous for the yearly pilgrimages to Ireland’s holiest mountain, Croagh Patrick, which acts as a striking backdrop to the charming town of Westport. Clew Bay County Mayo DAY ONE WESTPORT, COUNTY MAYO Welcome to Westport, County Mayo! You'll be collected at the train station and transported to your accommodations. Meet your hosts and head out to explore the charming town of Westport on your own. Overnight: Westport DAY TWO AUGHAGOWER, CURVEY, KNAPPAGH LAKE, MOUNTBROWN After breakfast, head to Drummindoo Stud, one of the top riding facilities on the west of Ireland to meet your riding hosts, the horses, and other riders. After introductions and an assessment ride in the indoor arena, riders and horses are transferred to the village of Aughagower. Ride through the village of Curvey, along the shores of Knappagh Lake, the village of Mountbrown and returning to Aughagower via an old shepherd’s track. After riding, guests will have the chance to visit the round tower and monastic site -- dating back to the 7th century! Overnight: Westport DAY THREE CLOONA, CROAGH PATRICK, TEEVNACROAGHA, OWENEE RIVER Morning transfer to Cloona just outside of Westport. Today take the Skelp Ride towards the east side of Ireland’s Holiest Mountain, Croagh Patrick and then on to Teevnacroagha to ride in the footsteps of Saint Patrick to the foot of the mountain which has been a site of worship for over 3,000 years. Cross the Owenwee river and onto the peat bog tracks at Owenwee. Peat is the traditional Peat See the bog oak and how the peat is harvested before finishing the day at Cloona. Overnight: Westport THE NEW YOU DAY FOUR BOURIS, LAGHTA, BUNOWEN RIVER Todays ride begins in the village of Bouris for the Laghta Ride. This ride takes travels west of Croagh Patrick, high up in the hills to Laghta beside deserted homesteads. We cross the Bunowen River and enjoy panoramic views of Louisburgh and the Atlantic Ocean on our descent. There is evidence in the landscape of the Great Irish Famine of ‘Lazy Beds’, a traditional method of arable cultivation, where potatoes were grown. Ride along bog roads and finish the day on the return to Bouris. Overnight: Westport DAY FIVE FORMOYLE, CARROWNISKEY RIVER, DOUGHMAKEON STRAND The day begins in Formoyle. This exciting ride takes traverses over a mountain pass, close to one of many megalithic burial sites in the area. Ride through the Carrowniskey River and onto the bog roads at Feenone with views of Clare Island, home to Ireland’s famous Pirate Queen who controlled the waters of Clew Bay in the 1500’s! Afterwards, head for Doughmakeon Strand for a brisk canter or gallop before returning to Formoyle. THE NEW YOU Overnight: Westport DAY SIX EMLAGH POINT, CROSS STRAND, FORMOYLE After breakfast, ride to Emlagh Point and to Cross Strand, with ample opportunities to gallop on the long sandy beach, with glimpses of Inishturk Island and Connemara in the distance! Visit Clapper Bridge, the bridge with the eyes, before returning to Formoyle where you will say goodbye to your equine companion. This evening, meet up with host and new friends to enjoy a farewell dinner and exchange stories of your memorable Ireland riding vacation. Overnight: Westport THE NEW YOU DAY SEVEN DUBLIN CITY Morning collection at the guesthouse and transport to the train station for return journey to Dublin City.
