The area has a thriving agricultural economy in the south, as well as energy and forestry industries in the north. The Pembina Hills region provides residents with the essence of rural Alberta. A multitude of recreational and cultural opportunities exist, including excellent community theatres, libraries, golf courses, tennis courts, hockey arenas, curling rinks, ski hills and many other facilities. Numerous popular lakes and rivers encompass the natural areas, attracting many outdoor enthusiasts. “Together We Learn” The School Division About Us Pembina Hills School Division delivers educational services to the municipalities of Swan Hills, Woodlands County, County of Barrhead, Town of Barrhead, Westlock County, Town of Westlock, Village of Clyde, the south eastern portion of M.D. of Big Lakes and the southern portion of the M.D. of Lesser Slave River. Public school services are provided through twenty schools. Two of these are Hutterite Colonies while another school offers an alternate public program focusing on a non-denominational Christian education. Pembina Hills also has established Outreach and Virtual School programs. Pembina Hills Regional Division No. 7 has a long history of outstanding education along with a strong sense of community. We are proud of the welcoming atmosphere that exists at our schools. This creates a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable and safe and parents are encouraged to get involved. Through a Service Agreement with Alberta Education, PHRD is also responsible for the Alberta Distance Learning Centre (ADLC). Based in Barrhead, with regional offices in Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge, ADLC offers core and complementary courses, as well as Francophone and French Immersion programs, outlined in Alberta Education’s programs of study. ADLC provides 21st Century Learning opportunities in print, online, and blended formats for Grades 1 – 12 students and adult learners across Alberta. “Together We Learn” Mandate Pembina Hills School Division shall deliver an education program consistent with the Alberta School Act. Purpose Our purpose is to ensure the delivery of an excellent education to our students so they become good citizens who contribute to society. Engaged and Effective Governance The Board’s Priorities for 2013-2016 are a continuation of the Priorities from the previous year and are as follows: The Engaged Learner - This central focus captures the Board’s intent that all participants in the education system need to become Engaged Learners. The students will be engaged when their teachers, administration, and parents demonstrate commitment to learning. This concept is central to the Board’s motto; “Together We Learn”. Success for ALL Students - This priority captures the desire of the Board that all students achieve success relevant to their grade level, ability and individual needs. Under this priority the Board envisioned strategies to support learners in the inclusive learning environment of our rural schools. Universal Design for Learning and Differentiated Instruction - This priority recognizes the value and importance of designing instruction and assessment in ways that are accessible to EVERY child.
