Service Academy process: Senator’s Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman As your United States Senators, we are honored to have the privilege every year of nominating a number of Ohio’s top young achievers for entry into one of our nation’s military academies. These include the Military Academy at West Point, the Air Force Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, and the Naval Academy. Our military academies offer the education, training, and leadership skills proven to provide each branch of the military with the best, brightest and most dedicated officers in the world. To be considered for a nomination, an applicant must be: A U.S. citizen and legal resident of Ohio Between the ages of 17 and 23 by July 1st of the admission year March – September 2017 – COMPLETE APPLICATION Candidates can request an application from both senators beginning March 1st of their junior year. Candidates must complete an application packet for each senator by the hard deadline. The completed application for Senator Brown must be sent to his Cleveland office. The completed application for Senator Portman must be sent to his Columbus office. Friday, September 22, 2017 – DEADLINE! All required information for a completed application packet must be physically received in the offices by close of business on Friday, September 22, 2017. Completed applications can be submitted to Senator Brown only from August 1, 2017 – September 22, 2017. Applications that are submitted during the month of August will receive 25 extra points. Applications received from September 1st – September 15th will receive 15 extra points. Completed applications can be submitted to Senator Portman from March 1, 2017 – September 22, 2017. September – November 2017 – INTERVIEWS Candidates chosen for an interview will be notified via mail. Senator Brown’s Academy Review Board will hold interviews in Bowling Green, Cambridge, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Youngstown. Senator Portman’s Academy Review Board will hold all interviews in Columbus. Please refer to the individual offices for the dates. January 2018 – NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED! Both Senator Brown and Senator Portman will notify the interviewed candidates and will submit the nominations to the academies. Although, some appointments are offered beyond May, the academies will make the majority of the appointments between January and May. June 2018 Appointed cadets/midshipmen are due at the academies for I-Day. FAQs: When can I apply for a nomination from both Ohio Senators to one of the service academies? You can apply for a nomination between March 1st of your junior year and September 22rd of your senior year. For the class entering in June 2018, the completed application form must be received on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2017. Senator Brown’s requirements for a completed application packet: Completed five page application Two one-page essays Two letters of recommendation (one from an adult and one from a peer) High School transcript SAT/ACT test scores Senator Portman’s requirements for a completed application packet: Completed application form One 1-2 page essay Three letters of recommendation (one must be from your principal or guidance counselor) High School transcript SAT/ACT test scores Who can I apply to for a nomination? Make sure you know the deadlines for each nominating source and for each of the academies. Can I apply to more than one academy? How many academies are there? You may be considered for any academy you are interested in attending. There are five United States Service Academies.
