Airboy ReturnsBy Avery AbernethyOne of the best independent comic series of the 1980s 1990s. Airboy does not have super powers, but he is a classic action-adventure pilot hero. The art is excellent. The series is best in volume 1 and 2. 3 is not as good.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy William Clark CunninghamBought this after I read the first volume. I will be buying the third volume soon.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Airboy Flies Even HigherBy Stephen Vincent KemptonA couple of months ago I geeked out when I read the first Airboy Archive. I had a great time and consumed it a a record pace. Well it happened again. I read this 300 plus page tome in 24 hours. If anything it is even better then the first volume. This volume reprints Airboy #17 through #25 plus the 3 issue Valkyrie mini-series and all the Skywolf back up strips, plus posters and covers. All originally published in comics cover dated 1987 by the late great Eclipse Comics.First off let me let me get off my only negative rant. I still do not like the tan paper. It looks like good quality paper and is thicker for example then the paper used by the new Marvel Epic Collections which these resemble. But the dark paper just makes the art look "muddy" and the coloring too dark. Considering much of the colors were done by Steve Oliff (one of the best colorists in the biz) it is a crime. This book deserves Bright White paper.Chuck Dixon writes every story and you can feel his love of the cast just shinning through the pages. The art is by some of the best in the business , many of them just breaking in at the time . We have Tim Truman, Bo Hampton, Tom Yeates ,Dan Spiegle, Ron Randall, Tom Lyle and Graham Nolan. The stand out art is the over 70 pages of Paul Gulacy Valkyrie art.Misery is back in the first two part Airboy story which speculates that a 3rd plane with an Atom Bomb on it was sent at the same time but instead to Russia. Next we get a two parter with giant talking rats. This is revamp of a gruesome rat Golden Age story. Next is the three part Arctic Death Zone which Chuck Dixon says was his attempt at writing a Alistair MacLean type of epic action romp. The volume lastly winds up with two solo stories which re-introduce the original muck monster The Heap.We also get seven Skywolf stories set in the early 1950's. MIG Alley a three part Skywolf story which brings back Bald Eagle . The Black Angel is also reintroduced in a two parter. Plus we get a two part story set in 1915 featuring Skywolf's dad who flew for Pancho Villa. The Valkyrie mini- series was my favorite of the volume. Val is abducted by the Russians and put on trial for War Crimes. In this story we get to see the Black Angel in modern times (1987) and the start of a new Black Angel. The new cover by Tim Truman is great and the Introduction by Chuck Dixon is also excellent. This a great fun stuff. Please buy this book. If my math is right we have enough material for two more volumes. Hopefully they will be solicited soon. Then IDW can bring out some more great Eclipse Archives like DNAgents, Crossfire, Liberty Project, Sabre and Aztec Ace.Highly Recommended Airboy, Valkyrie, and Skywolf are back! The high flying action-adventure tales of the Eclipse Comics series come roaring back to life in Volume 2 Airboy Archives with a new introduction by writer Chuck Dixon.Collects issues #17–25 of Airboy, the first three-issue Valkyrie mini-series, and all of the Skywolf back-up stories.
