Sometimes, a few words say it all. Hundreds of our cyclists ceremonies and volunteers told us, “Why I PMC” The reasons were simple and succinct and we can all appreciate the sharing and connectivity. Obviously, we found it so moving that we chose it for this year’s cover image. One thing I’ve learned over the past 34 years is that weather is to a cycling event as location is to real estate. This year, we played the market correctly. After five weeks of rain and oppressive heat and humidity, we caught a weather break that welcomed in eight weeks of glorious New England temperatures and low humidity. And the good times continued through the summer/fall fundraising season. I am thrilled to once again, bring big hope and dollars to Dana-Farber in the form of a record $39 million gift. It was a very good year, indeed. Congratulations and thank you to all. See you on the Road, Billy Starr Founder and Executive Director 1 To the PMC Family, The support of the Pan-Mass Challenge has long served as a cornerstone in Dana-Farber’s LEFT CENTER Dr. Benz at mission to conquer cancer. In constructing and modernizing key facilities—Charles A. Dana Building, Jimmy Fund Clinic, Longwood Center, and Molecular Cancer Imaging Facility—we are reinforcing our commitment to the highest caliber of innovative research and clinical excellence. On the research front, the creation of the OncoPanel, with its unprecedented ability to read the genetic code of 305 genes in a tumor sample, will shed valuable light on genetic mutations and other crucial types of DNA alternations found in a spectrum of cancers. This pioneering work is fundamental to the delivery of personalized medicine, empowering physi- cians to better diagnose cancer, develop and choose targeted therapies, monitor treatment effectiveness, and improve outcomes for all cancer patients. New and improved multi-drug therapies represent the next generation of cancer thera- peutics. One example is a recent clinical trial that revealed how a combination of a PARP inhibitor and an anti-angiogenesis drug holds great promise for treating advanced ovarian and triple-negative breast cancers. We could not do this critical work without you. Sincerely, Edward J. Benz, Jr., M.D. President, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute 2 The PMC Raises Record $39 Million for Dana-Farber The 2013 Pan-Mass Challenge raised $39 million for adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The 2013 fundraising total is $2 million more than the PMC gave in 2012 and brings its 34-year Jimmy Fund contribution to $414 million. The PMC is the most successful athletic fundraising event in the United States; it raises and contributes more money to charity than any other such event. One-hundred-percent of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to the Jimmy Fund. The PMC is Dana-Farber’s largest single contributor and the event raises nearly 50 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue. “Since the 2009 recession, PMC has grown from raising $30 to $39 million, which is a 7.5 percent average growth per year,” says PMC Founder and Executive Director Billy Starr. “Each year, riders come to the event with a renewed commitment to raising money for cancer research.” LEFT (L to R) Lee Nadler, MD, senior vice president, Experimental Medicine of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and PMC Senior Investigator; Rob DeMartini, president and CEO of New Balance; Josh Bekenstein, managing director of Bain Capitol and PMC board member; Billy Starr, founder and executive director of the PMC; Todd Langton, president, TGL Associates and chairman of the PMC board; Edward J.
