SANTA BARBARA ATHLETIC ROUND TABLE HALL OF FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY An Evening 2019 The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table is thrilled to host the 2019 Hall of Fame Banquet on Monday, October 14th. It will be the 52st annual Hall of Fame ceremony. With The Athletes For over fifty years our organization has supported student athletes in the greater Santa Barbara area. Each year we have been able to give more than 1,000 student athletes and coaches a well deserved pat on the back and extra encouragement Wednesday, May 8, 2019 to help them become better citizens. To this day we have no paid staff and no office. All your support goes directly to the student athletes. For the last 51 years, the SBART has been recognizing student athletes in our community for their hard work and dedication both on the field of play and in the classroom. Thank you to all of you in attendance tonight for showing your support for our local student- athletes, coaches, community leaders, sports media and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize all the hard-working members of the SBART Board of Directors. The SBART has no paid staff; we are truly a “working board” with countless committee meetings, luncheons and long hours spent, coupled with the financial generosity of our sponsors and members, to keep the SBART mission moving forward. Hosting the last 60 weekly luncheons has provided me with an amazing appreciation for the coaches in our community. We are truly spoiled by the willingness of coaches in this community to dedicate their time to helping build better humans. Last, but not least, a very hearty “thank you” to our local sports media for covering our luncheons, working together to honor our student-athletes with weekly and end-of-year awards and for publically sharing all of the great sports stories from our high schools and colleges each and every day. Tonight’s event marks the end of my two-year term as President of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. These two years have been an incredible time in my life as my wife Jill and I welcomed our son Jett into the world. I hope one day Jett has the chance to participate in athletics, hopefully attend a luncheon, and give back when his playing days are over. The SBART now welcomes Ken Newendorp as President of the Santa Barbara President’s Message President’s Athletic Round Table. Ken brings with him and incredibly complete knowledge of our local sports geography. Ken is a San Marcos graduate (and recent inductee into their Hall of Fame). To fully understand the college sports scene he decided to played soccer at SBCC, UCSB, and Westmont (there cannot be many, if anyone, who has done the same). Ken then coached soccer at San Marcos, UCSB and SBCC. Welcome Ken! 2 SBART Founders 2019 More than five decades ago, Jerry Harwin and Caesar Uyesaka sipped coffee at Caesar’s Restaurant, talking about the need for a sports group in Santa Barbara that could help the local athletic community in times of need. After Jerry and Caesar shared a couple more coffee breaks together, the Santa SBART Barbara Athletic Round Table was born. Its motto: The advancement and betterment of all sports and athletics in the greater Santa Barbara area. The SBART got off to a fast start. Its first organizational meeting was held at Santa Barbara’s East Beach on January 25, 1968. Hundreds of people attended this meeting, and over 200 joined that evening as Charter Members. The SBART’s first annual banquet was held at Santa Barbara City College on June 22, 1968. Through membership dues, contributions, fundraising events and local foundations, the Round Table has raised more than $2 million for local athletics. Founders Harry’s Plaza Café was the site of the SBART’s first press luncheon held on September 14, 1970. The luncheons, initiated by the new president, Bill Bertka, were similar to a “Monday Morning Quarterback Club.” All area schools were represented by the head coaches of the sports in season. For over four decades the SBART luncheons have been held at Harry’s every Monday, attended by standing-room-only crowds. Since its first meeting back in 1968, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table has helped thousands of individuals and organizations by raising funds to support their athletic programs. The Round Table is proud to help student-athletes at all levels compete in events they would otherwise not have been able to attend. It is with our deepest regards and warmest thanks that we acknowledge and celebrate the vision and hard work of our founders, Caesar Uyesaka, Jerry Harwin and Bill Bertka. The mission of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table is to Mission recognize and support athletic participation as an important Statement means of fostering discipline, teamwork, self-respect, personal responsibility, and camaraderie. The SBART provides a public forum for area athletic coaches and athletes; grants financial support to organizations, teams, and individuals to further their participation in sports; and publicly honors athletic performance, scholastic achievement and exemplary ethical behavior. 3 2019 Founders & Past Presidents Bill Bertka Jerry Harwin Caesar Uyesaka Founder Founder Founder Jerry Harwin 1968-70 Tim Tremblay 1997-99 Bill Bertka 1970-72 Joe Howell 1999-01 Larry Crandell 1972-74 Chris Casebeeer 2001-03 Bill Blythe 1974-80 Marc Gamberdella 2003-05 Craig Case 1980-85 Barry Taugher 2005-07 Bob Huhn 1985-89 Rick Wilson 2007-09 Dick Mires 1989-91 Catharine Manset Morreale 2009-11 David Pintard 1991-93 Rich Hanna 2011-13 Paul Menzel 1993-95 Laurie Leighty 2013-15 Joan Russell-Price 1995-97 Cara Gamberdella 2015-17 Board of Directors 2018-19 Gary Cunningham Chairman of the Board Founders Gene Deering President Bryan Cornet Secretary Ken Newendorp President-Elect Arjun McAvoy Treasurer Sarai Anderson Laurie Leighty* Ed Aronchick Scott Lindberg Alison Bernal John McCutcheon Paul Bradford Richard Mires* Dan Brennan Pat Moorhouse-MacPHee Rocco Constantino Tino Munoz SBART Bob Dinaberg Diane O’Brien Jason Donnelly David Pintard Marc Gamberdella* Jay Smith Cara Gamberdella* John Stoney Rich Hanna* Mike Warren Rick Hubbard Jason Wilson Joe Howell* Rick Wilson* *Past President 4 Platinum Members $2,500 level 2019 Tully Ramsaur Union Bank WFG National Title Ernesto & Kathy Quiroz American Riviera Bank George Page Foundation Noozhawk Cottage Hospital Paul Menzel Founder’s Circle Members $1,000 level Peter Jordano Stevens and Associates Mosher Foundation Mick Luckhurst Bank of the Sierra Keith Berry Chad & Ginny Dreier Volentine Foundation Regal Members $250 level Ann Sonstelie Jon Lee Mr. Randy Rowse Anthony Crenshaw Jon Sonstelie Mr. Richard Mires Arjun McAvoy Karen Griffith Mr. Roger Whalen Barbara Ford Kelly Jensen Mr. Steve Brown Barry Liker Ken Preston Mr. Steve Hyslop Bob & Holly Murphy Lad Handelman Mr. Tim Tremblay Bolden Brace Laurie Leighty Ms. Diane Barrickman Bruce Micheel Linda Seals Ms. Janis Ingham Cara Gamberdella Louis Manzo Ms. Joan Russell-Price Carl & Karen Peus Mark & Sharon Basham Ms. Pat Moorhouse Darryll Dewan Matt & Selena English Paul Gamberdella David Hoffman Mr Joe Talarico Renee Grubb Dexter Goodell Mr. Bill Peeples Richard Schroeder Diane & Joe O’Brien Mr. Bob Archer Ron Dickman Donald & Anita Barry Mr. Bob Dinaberg Scott Lindberg Donn Bernstein Mr. Bob Huhn Steven Zelko, MD Dr. Dan Brennan Mr. David Borgatello Thomas Luria Dr. Frank Gamberdella Mr. Dick Jensen Tim McGaughey Dr. Richard Ryu MD Mr. Gary Cunningham Tim Nightingale Gene Deering Mr. Jay Smith Vaughn Wipf DDS George & Cathy Rempe Mr. Jeff Nelson William & Joan Oakley Guy Rivera Mr. Joel A. The make-up of high school leagues changed, and the prep calendar started earlier than ever. In addition, the most rainfall the area has received in years caused several schedule changes during the early part of the spring season.
