Last revised in 2012, the curriculum is being revised to address new Fine Arts Music Standards that were released in June 2014. Communicate at a basic level in the arts disciplines – music, theatre, or the visual arts. This includes knowledge and skills in the use of the basic vocabularies, materials, tools, techniques, and intellectual methods of each art discipline. 2. Communicate proficiently in at least one art form, including the ability to define and solve artistic problems with insight, reason, and technical proficiency. 3. Develop and present basic analyses of works of art from structural, historical, and cultural perspectives, and from combinations of those perspectives. This includes the ability to understand and evaluate work in the various arts disciplines. 4. Relate various types of arts knowledge and skills within and across the arts disciplines. This includes mixing and matching competencies and understandings in art-making, history and culture, and analysis in any arts-related project. 5. Have an informed acquaintance with exemplary works of art from a variety of cultures and historical periods, and a basic understanding of historical development in the arts disciplines, across the arts as a whole, and within cultures. Lifelong Artistic Literacy Goals Artistic Literacy is a necessary life and learning skill for all the citizens of our increasingly complex global society. Through the process of engaging the arts, students may develop “Artistic Literacy”––the ability to encode and decode (“read” and “write”) aesthetic wisdom that is expressed and received in symbolic and metaphoric forms that are unique to the arts. Artistic Literacy is not limited only to appreciating and practicing the arts; it is a vital life skill for citizens of our 21st Century world. Artistic Literacy allows us to read, write, and understand the symbols and metaphors in which so many current messages are encoded— messages that run the gamut of human activity from advertising, to politics, to religion. In doing this, the language of the arts helps to break down cultural barriers to knowledge and allows us to cross personal and cultural borders leading to better understanding of our self and others. Students in the Francis Howell School District will be artistically literate citizens that will: 1. Use a variety of artistic media, symbols and metaphors to independently create and perform work that expresses and communicates their own ideas, and are able to respond by analyzing and interpreting the artistic communications of others. 2. Find at least one arts discipline in which they develop sufficient competence to continue active involvement in creating, performing, and responding to art as an adult. 3. Know and understand artwork from varied historical periods and cultures, and actively seek and appreciate diverse forms and genres of artwork of enduring quality/significance. They also seek to understand relationships among the arts, and cultivate habits of searching for and identifying patterns, relationships between the arts and other knowledge. 4. Find joy, inspiration, peace, intellectual stimulation, meaning, and other life-enhancing qualities through participation in all of the arts. 5. Seek artistic experience and support the arts in their local, state, national, and global communities. FHSD Academics MDR 2nd Grade Music Fall 2016 Revised Page 3 BoE apprv’d xx/xx/xx Rationale for Elementary Music Music is a part of the fabric of our society. Every human culture uses, and has used, music to carry forward its ideas and ideals. Success in society is predicated on success in school. The effectiveness of music study in helping children become better students is well documented. Participation in music brings countless psychological, physical, and/or spiritual benefits to each individual throughout life . Skills learned through the discipline of music transfer to study skills, communication skills, and cognitive skills useful in every part of the curriculum. Students in music consistently outperform their non-arts peers on standardized tests, scholarships, and awards. Data supports a long-established base of anecdotal knowledge to the effect that music education makes kids smarter. Even more compelling is a combination of recent behavioral studies and neurological research that show how music study actively contributes to brain development. Course Description for 2nd Grade Music It is the vision of the Francis Howell Elementary Music department to enjoy music, to dance, to sing, to create, and to play music with all students. Performing, creating, and responding to music are the fundamental music processes in which humans engage. Students, particularly in primary grades, learn by doing. Singing, playing instruments, moving to music, and creating music enable them to acquire musical skills and knowledge that can be developed in no other way. The course will focus on: learning proper vocabulary and concepts associated with music; singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music; performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music; improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments; composing and arranging music within specified guidelines; reading and notating music; listening to, analyzing, and describing music; evaluating music and music performances; understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts; and understanding music in relation to history and culture. Specific performances, elements, and artistic perceptions in 2nd grade include (but are not limited to) identifying and imitating voices, echoing rhythms, identifying pitch and speed, beginning to describe how music makes them feel, and describe the characteristics of different music styles. 2nd Grade Music Curriculum Team Curriculum Committee FHSD Academics MDR 2nd Grade Music Fall 2016 Revised Page 4 BoE apprv’d xx/xx/xx Evan Babel Henderson Elementary Kelly Brophy Independence Elementary Erica Coyne Harvest Ridge Elementary Matt Mueller Fairmount Elementary Julie Vahle John Weldon Elementary Victoria Weir Central Elementary K-12 Fine Arts Content Leader Michelle Ridlen Director of Student Learning Dr. Chris Greiner Chief Academic Officer Nicole
