Her nationally televised, critically acclaimed The Invisible War (Cinedigm/Documara, PBS, 2012) is a groundbreaking investigation into the epidemic of rape in the U.S. military. The film won the Audience Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, the Independent Spirit Award for best documentary, and an Oscar nomination, while also leading Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to announce significant policy changes in the way the military investigated and prosecuted rape, inspiring Senator Gillibrand to coauthor and push for the passage of the Military Justice Improvement Act (MJIA), and catalyzing the penning of 19 additional new pieces of Congressional legislation. Her previous film Outrage (Magnolia Pictures, HBO, 2009), an Emmy nominated work of investigative journalism, is a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of powerful politicians and the institutions that protect them. Ziering also produced The Memory Thief (2007), a New York Times critics’ pick that won several festival awards; co-directed and produced Derrida (Zeitgeist Films, 2002), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won the Golden Gate award at the San Francisco Film Festival; and co-produced Richard Cohen’s critically acclaimed Taylor’s Campaign. Ziering is the 2012 recipient of the Nestor Almendros Prize for Courage and Filmmaking, the 2013 Ridenhour Documentary Film Prize, and the 2013 Gracie Award for Outstanding Producer in News/Non-Fiction. She is currently in production on new projects for HBO and CNN. .
