MASS DEDICATED AUGUST 5. 1910. : PREFACE. Nearly nine generations of Dr. Samuel Fuller's descendants have passed away without any collection of their genealogical records having been made. Meanwhile old records have been fading, wearing out, being lost, neglected and burned, as for example, the list of towns whose documents have been destroyed by fire is quite extensive. While making a search for the records of descendants of Edward Fuller of the Mayflower, a brother of Dr. Samuel, and since pub- lishing (in 1908) the material obtained, I have been collecting information concerning this, another of the the ancestral American Fuller families, and herewith present the results thus far obtained. Records of this kind will always be incomplete, and in this case it is my judgment that it is time, and the safest and most advisable course, to publish what I have already obtained rather than await the slow and uncertain process of accumulation of some of the data which will be found wanting. In regard to the term " Ancestral Fuller famiHes," it has seemed quite appropriate to speak of those American families as ancestral, whose emigrant ancestor settled in America prior to 1650. These heads of families so far as I know were ten in number Edward Fuller, born in 1575, came to America in 1620. Dr. Samuel, born in 1580, came to America in 1620. John of Lynn, born in ?, came to America in 1630. John of Newton, born in 161 1, came to America in 1635. John of Ipswich, born in 1620, came to America in 1635. Thomas of Woburn, born in ?, came to America in 1638. Robert of Salem, born in ?, came to America in 1638. Robert of Dorchester, born in ?, came to America in 1640. Captain Matthew, born in ?, came to America in 1640. Thomas of Dedham, born in ?, came to America in 1642. In this volume the extension of data concerning those descend- ants not bearing the name of Fuller, has been more restricted than in the first volume, in order to keep the cost of the work within the bounds suggested by previous experience. Beyond the names and dates of birth of children of Fuller daughters, who have married "; 6 PREFACE. those having other names than Fuller, genealogical details have generally been left to the genealogist of the allied family. The compiler has been especially aided in the records of the earlier generations by the work of the late Newton Fuller of New London, Ct. ; by the MSS. of Prof. H. W. Brainard of Hartford, Ct. and by material furnished by F. A. Fuller of Buffalo, N. Y. and Charles M. Thatcher of Middleboro, Mass., all of whom are experienced genealogists. Among correspondents, I have been favored by having many who were particularly interested in the work, as Mrs. L. A. Cobb, No. 148 of ist Group; Mr. VV. F. Since it has seemed a most appropriate place, I have added to this volume a supplement containing additional information concerning the descendants of Edward Fuller of the Mayflower, and corrections of errors in Volume i that have been brought to my notice. These two volumes constitute what may be considered the " Mayflower Fuller Genealogy," and by Mayflower Fullers I mean those who came to America in 1620 on the ship Mayflower, and their descendants. B.", "F. A. F.", "N. F.", "C. M. T." and "h. E. F." have been used to indicate information obtained from H. W. Brainard, F. A. Fuller, Newton Fuller, Charles M. Thatcher, and Linus E. Fuller. EXPLANATIONS. In the arrangement of the genealogical record, each descendant bearing the surname Fuller has an individual number and also a family number. The sign $ placed before the family number of a son indicates that his family record is given further on, in his group and generation, placed in order of seniority by his individual number. In the case of daughters, it has been the intention to give immediately after their individual and family number and names, their individual genealogical record, and in case of marriage the date of the same, with name of husband, and if there are children their names and date and place of birth, their further genealogical record being generally left to the genealogist of the allied family. The explanation of the change from the record by generations to record by group and generation is given on page 22. AMERICAN FULLER GENEALOGY. DR. SAMUEL FULLER LINE. Samuel' Fuller, born in England ; baptized there Jan. 29, 1580; d. 1633 in Plymouth, Mass.; m. i, Alice Glascock; m. 2, April 24, 1 613, Agnes Carpenter, who died 161 5 in Leyden, Holland; m. 3, May 27, 1617, Bridget Lee. Samuel' Fuller was one of the band of Pilgrims, persecuted on account of religious convictions, who escaped from England to Holland in 1608, and settled in Leyden, Holland, in 1609. In the results of Mr. Dexter's researches amOng the records of Holland, published in a volume entitled " The England and Holland of the Pilgrims," Samuel Fuller is mentioned as a witness Oct. 7, 161 1, to the betrothal of Degory Priest, and to that of William White Jan. 27, 1612. As the widower of Alice Glascock, it is recorded he was betrothed to Agnes Carpenter March 15, 1613, and the witnesses were her father, Alexander Carpenter, Edward Southworth, William White, Roger Nelson, her sister, Alice Carpenter, and his sister, Anna or Susanna (Fuller) White. Samuel' Fuller was also a witness May 7, 1613, to the betrothal of his sister-in-law, Alice Carpenter, to Edward Southworth, and that of Samuel Terry May 16, 1614. He buried his child June 29, 16 1 5, and his wife Agnes July 3, 16 15. Later he lived in Pieters- kerkhof and was a witness Aug. 7^, 1615, to the betrothal of Samuel Butler, and that of Edmond Jessup Sept. 16, 1615. He was betrothed to Bridget Lee, May 12, 16 17, and as witnesses there were her mother, Josephine Lee, and her brother, Samuel Lee. They took up their residence near Marepoort, and Samuel Fuller witnessed the betrothal of John Goodman Sept. 16, 1619. He ' lO DESCENDANTS OF DR. SAMUEL FULLER. joined with Isaac Allerton, Mr. Bradford and Mr. Winslow June lo, 1620, in a letter concerning the affairs of the Pilgrims, to their associates, Mr. Carver and Mr. Cushman, then in England. The Pilgrims left Holland for America about Aug. i, 1620, by way of Southampton, England, and Samuel' Fuller's name appears as one of the signers of the "Compact" drawn up for the government of the Colony at Cape Cod, in November, 1620, in the vicinity of what is now Provincetown, Mass.
