Organised by the Friends of Wainui group, the annual gala is a fundraiser for the school. Profits from the gala help fund a teacher aide’s salary. “The Friends of Wainui wanted to make a positive impact for every child,” said principal Nolian Andrew. “If they fund a teacher aide it frees up teachers which means more hands to help the children.” Each class, from five-year-olds through to seniors, chose a craft activity to contribute items to the gala. The five- year-olds made gift boxes and screen- printed wrapping paper. Some students made Christmas decorations, some made cards and some made Gordon Walters-inspired art to sell. “We feel it’s important they take some responsibility to contribute to the school and they love it,” said Mrs Andrew. The total amount raised at the gala is yet to be confirmed but it is expected to exceed $10,000.
