Robert Mandelbaum Director & General Manager Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories Robert Mandelbaum is director of the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL), where he leads a group of applied research labs that help the Corporation maintain technology dominance. ATL’s current research portfolio focuses on generation-after-next technologies in the areas of autonomy, spectrum systems, informatics and applied sciences. Previously, Dr. Mandelbaum served as ATL’s Chief Technology Officer, where he led ATL’s technical direction and managed its independent research funds. In that role, he served as a technical liaison to customers such as the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), leveraging relationships to shape, win, and maintain programs across diverse areas. He also served as a key interface with Lockheed Martin’s business areas and managed relationships with leaders across industry and academia. Before joining ATL in September 2010, Dr. Mandelbaum served as a program manager at DARPA. There, he managed programs in the Information Processing Techniques, Tactical Technologies, and Transformational Convergence Technology offices. He initiated new programs such as Legged Squad Support System (LS3), and Autonomous Robotic Manipulation (ARM). He also managed a wide variety of other DARPA programs, including BigDog, LANdroids, and Learning Locomotion. Before joining DARPA, Dr. Mandelbaum was the director of the Commercial Vision business unit at Sarnoff Corporation (formerly RCA), which focused on applications of real-time computer vision such as automotive safety, robotic autonomy, and ISR. Dr. Mandelbaum holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. He has also worked as an adjunct faculty member at Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania. (September 2019) .
