MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATURE REGULAR SESSION 2019 By: Representatives Currie, Mangold To: Rules HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 128 1 A RESOLUTION COMMENDING COACH CAMERON ACHORD OF BROOKHAVEN 2 FOR BEING NAMED ASSISTANT SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR FOR THE NEW 3 ENGLAND PATRIOTS. 4 WHEREAS, Coach Cameron Achord of Brookhaven, Mississippi, 5 former interim head football coach at Southwest Mississippi 6 Community College, reached the highest level of his profession in 7 2018, when he was named assistant special teams coordinator for 8 the New England Patriots, a truly notable accomplishment; and 9 WHEREAS, after playing safety at Belhaven University, where 10 he received his bachelor's degree in computer science and sports 11 administration, Coach Achord began his distinguished coaching 12 career in 2009, when he served as a special teams graduate 13 assistant for the Golden Eagles football team at the University of 14 Southern Mississippi (USM), where he would make lasting 15 relationships that would ultimately lead to an amazing career 16 opportunity in his near future; and 17 WHEREAS, after his time at USM, Coach Achord joined Southwest 18 Mississippi Community College, where he moved up the coaching H. No. 128 *HR26/R2233* ~ OFFICIAL ~ N1/2 19/HR26/R2233 PAGE 1 (MCL\KW) 19 ranks as an assistant coach for special teams, quarterbacks, 20 running backs and tight ends, and later served as the school's 21 recruiting director and offensive coordinator, and as he garnered 22 the respect and admiration of his colleagues and superiors, he was 23 named the college's interim head coach after former head coach 24 Tucker Peavey departed; and 25 WHEREAS, soon after being named interim head coach at 26 Southwest, Coach Achord was contacted by Coach Joe Judge, the 27 special teams coordinator for the New England Patriots who he had 28 met during his time at USM, for an opportunity to interview for a 29 coaching position with the Patriots; and 30 WHEREAS, remarkably, two weeks after being named interim head 31 coach at Southwest, Coach Achord resigned from his position to 32 join the Patriots' coaching staff as assistant coach for special 33 teams, and he would go on to do his part in helping the team reign 34 victorious against the Los Angeles Rams at Super Bowl LIII, in 35 Atlanta, Georgia, on February 3, 2019; and 36 WHEREAS, as a man with superb coaching abilities and talent, 37 Coach Achord certainly exemplifies the qualities of perseverance 38 and dedication, inspiring all of those around him to strive for 39 greatness each day; and 40 WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to 41 commend outstanding Mississippians, especially those such as Coach 42 Cameron Achord, whose athletic excellence and outstanding 43 leadership brings honor to the State of Mississippi: H. No. 128 *HR26/R2233* ~ OFFICIAL ~ 19/HR26/R2233 PAGE 2 (MCL\KW) 44 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF 45 REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby 46 commend Coach Cameron Achord of Brookhaven, Mississippi, for being 47 selected as an assistant special teams coordinator for the New 48 England Patriots. 49 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be 50 furnished to Coach Cameron Achord and to the members of the 51 Capitol Press Corps.
