Annexure - 2: Household Schedule 93-94 iv Preface Due to the Census of India, being the single biggest administrative exercise held anywhere in the world, it is quite natural that the release of its result is a time consuming affair. In order to minimise this delay the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India had decided to release the Provisional Population results in three phases through manual consolidation of figures from the 'Enumerators Abstract', which were prepared by the enumerators from the Household Schedule. The first two publications of the series "Provisional Population Totals - Paper 1 of 2001 and Paper 2 of 2001" were published during the last year. The present publication, Paper 3 of 2001 is the last in this series. In Provisional Population Totals - Paper 1 of 2001, details regarding district-wise population of A&N Islands, Sex ratio, Literacy and Population in the age group 0-6 were presented. Provisional Population Totals - Paper 2 of 2001 contained data on rural-urban spread of population, Sex ratio, Literacy and Population in the age group 0-6 upto tehsil level. The present publication Paper 3 of 2001 contains basic data on workers and non-workers and categories of workers upto tehsil level with rural urban spread. Though the data given in Paper-3 of 2001 are also provisional, it is hoped that this data will be of immense use to data users, planners and scholars etc. The officers and staff of this directorate have worked untiringly and with enthusiasm to bring out this publication in time. I place on record my appreciation for their sincerity and dedication. I acknowledge the contribution made by Sri P.K.Majumdar, Deputy Director of Census Operations, Sri P.K.T.Nair, Statistical Investigator Grade-I, Sri V.O.Koshy, Statistical Investigator Grade-III and Sri Jagadeesan, Compiler in the preparation of these three publications. The Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India Sri J.K.Banthia has always been a source of strength, inspiration and guidance at all stages of Census operations of India 2001. I am thankful to Sri R.G.Mitra, Oy. Registrar General (C&T) for his valuable advise and guidance. I also record my sincere thanks to Dr. R.P.Singh, Asst. Registrar General (Map), Sri C. The success of any Census entirely depends upon the accuracy as well as the quick availability of data. As Census is one of the biggest administrative operations, it generally takes much time to finalize the mine of data obtained from each and every individual of the country, which lessens the very aim of Census. In order to avoid this, the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India has planned to release the provisional statistics of various parameters which are being derived phase wise through manual compilation of figures received from Charge Census Officers in specially designed formats. The actual enumeration of Census of India 2001, the first Census of the new millennium, commenced during 9th to 28th February 2001 with a revisional round from 1st to 5th March 2001 in order to update the Census data as on the Census moment viz. 00:00 hours of 1 st March 2001. Soon after the completion of Census, the following Provisional Population Tables were released through media on 27th March 2001 and the same with brief analysis and other articles was published on 30-3-2001 in the form of Paper 1 of 2001. 1. Population distribution, percentage decadal growth rate, sex ratio and population density for union territory and districts, 2001. 2. Percentage decadal variation in population for union territory and djstricts since 1901. 3. Sex ratio for union territory and districts since 1901. 4. Population in the age group 0-6, number of literates, literacy rates by sex for union territory and districts, 2001. As the data published in Paper 1 of 2001 was limited only upto District level, in the second phase the same data upto tehsil level was published entitled 'Provisional Population Totals - Paper 2 of 2001' comprising the following data: Table-1: Population, Child Population ,n the Age Group 0-6 and Literates by Residence and Sex for Union Territory, Districts and Towns: 2001. Table-2: Population, Child population in the Age Group 0-6 and Literates by Residence and Sex for Union Territory, Districts and Tehsils : 2001.
