INTRODUCTION I Have Early Letters Between W

INTRODUCTION I have early letters between W. C. Darrah and Ray Bohman discussing the collecting of stereo views and their value in the early ‘70s. Personal correspondence between collectors at that time was the only way of sharing information prior to the establishment of NSA. On December 5, 1973, Richard Russack sent a questionnaire to approximately 250 stereo collectors to see if there was an interest in forming a “stereo collector’s organization.” Rick stated, “I believe that such a group could be helpful in at least two major areas. Firstly, the newsletter of the group could serve as a clearing house for information on particular views, subjects or photographers...Secondly, the group’s newsletter could also aid collectors in disposing unwanted items and also aid in adding items...Why not a “For Trade”...and certainly a “For Sale and Wanted” section...By this time you know what I have in mind.” Richard Russack.” On January 28, 1974, an invitation was issued to about 500 names of collectors interested in stereo by Richard Russack and John Waldsmith. It also defined the contents of a proposed newsletter to be called Stereo World. During the 1980’s there was a big influx of members who were taking 3-D photographs and the magazine became more balanced between the collectors and the shooters. Tex Treadwell edited the previous index (Volumes 1 through 23) and defined his guidelines for inclusion of entries. These guidelines were a basis for my work, but I decided to start over from Vol 1, Number 1, in order to give continuity to the complete work. (However, some of the continuity was lost due to the long creation time, forgetting what I had planned and changing my mind at different stages.) It would have been beneficial to give additional information about each subject so researchers could narrow their choice of which magazine to look at first, but this, too, would have increased the subjectivity of the entry and increased the work load. Modern Photographers are listed if a photo is printed or there is a significant statement about them in the magazine. I wanted to list every mention of their name - which I did for Vintage Photographers - but time and space ruled it out. I could tell stories about the hundreds of hours we spent preparing the Index — but instead, I will just thank my lovely wife, Sherryl, for telling John Dennis she would create it and then for helping me do it; my wonderful daughter Wendy Millis, for her work on the Author/Article section; my charming granddaughter Liz Orton, for creating the html code for the electronic version; and, finally my son, Brent at Rairdin Photography, for the use of his printing facility. We guarantee you will find an occasional error or omission and that you won’t agree with all my category selections or listing of subjects. Would I change anything if I were starting over? We’ll never know — because I wouldn’t do it again! . It was fun reading more than 8,000, 3D-filled pages in 200 issues of Stereo World (several times over for each one) but… (note: it’s 1 ½ years later and here I am working on the Index again, it is now up to date through 2008). I have a great deal of appreciation for Stereo World Editor, John Dennis, and all the volunteers who have prepared the magazine for the past 34 years. I pray you will find this issue of the Stereo World Index useful.
