This is much more than just a sports event: it is actually a real show everyone wants to be part of! This is the feeling that is spreading around in all sports halls and we may well realize that there is something special in the air when Europe’s best Volleyball clubs square off to battle for glory and all our fans can finally re-joy by saying: “Finally it is Champions League time!” The main attribute of this unique competition remain the stellar actions of the players that are competing out there on court. Players who can contribute emotions, display great athletic and physical skills and tell their own personal story which is made of commitment, fighting spirit, hard work, drive for the win, all qualities that portray the profile of a real “star”. The success story provided by the CEV Volleyball Champions League stems from the help and contribution provided by the hard work of all participating teams, but also by our sponsors (Champion, Mikasa and Gerflor) and all partners that are helping us market this competition and make a real show out of a Volleyball match. The major change in this year’s edition of the CEV Volleyball Champions League is that we have extended the starting field in both genders, with 28 teams participating in the men’s competition that will be spanning throughout 11 weeks of great actions up to the finals scheduled for March 2013. This decision was motivated by the huge interest the clubs are showing in the Champions League and to fulfill our goal to involve more teams thereby still safeguarding the very special quality and elitist spirit associated with this event. The same applies to the women’s competition where 24 teams will be lining up to find their way to the podium after 11 weeks of tough battles. These figures testify the great value of the Champions League and the desire of many more clubs to be finally part of this special family. We are all extremely glad with the expansion of the starting field especially since this is the sole way to bring the Champions League show close to as many as possible across Europe thereby getting more and more people fascinated by the unique attributes of our beautiful sport. Finally, after reviewing the solid foundations we have laid down for the campaign that is just about to start, I wish you all much fun with the always unique flavor and atmosphere of the CEV Volleyball Champions League and the very best of luck to all participating teams!
