ARIZONA KEVIN SUMLIN – HEAD COACH • Named Arizona’s head coach on January 14 after spending six seasons at Texas A&M where he amassed a 51-26 record. • Had seven players at Texas A&M go on to be first round picks in the NFL Draft, including Myles Garrett, the #1 overall pick in 2017, and Heisman winner Johnny Manziel. • Coached at the University of Houston from 2008-11, going 35-17. • In 10 seasons as a head coach, his offenses averaged more than 400 yards of total offense every season, including more than 500 yards five times. • According to 24/7 Sports, his six recruiting classes between 2012-17 were all Top-20 in the country with two Top-10 seasons (2013, 2014). • Started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Washington State for the 1989-90 seasons under head coach Mike Price. • Played as a linebacker at Purdue (1983-86) alongside future NFL players- Rod Woodson, Jim Everett, Fred Strickland, Mel Gray and Cris Dishman. • Born in Brewton, Ala., which in 2010 had a population of 5,408. Sumlin is the first African-American head football coach at Arizona. KHALIL TATE – JUNIOR QB • Tate earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention in 2017 and was a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award for college football’s top player and the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback. • Selected to the 2018 Davey O’Brien Award and Maxwell Award Watch Lists. • First player in Conference history to earn four consecutive Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. • Started final eight games of the season and threw for 1,591 yards with 14 touchdowns. • Recorded the fourth-most rushing yards in a singles season in Arizona history and set a Pac-12 quarterback single-season rushing record with 1,411 yards (9.2 avg) and scored 12 touchdowns. • Ran for 327 yards against Colorado (Oct. 7, 2017) and broke the FBS record for rushing yards in a game by a quarterback. • First player in program history with three 200+ rush games in the same season and had five runs of 70+ yards, which was the most of any quarterback in the country. • Threw for a career-high 302 yards and five touchdowns in Arizona’s bowl game against Purdue. • Became the first Arizona quarterback to start a game as true freshman in 2016 since Willie Tuitama did so in 2005. • Graduated from Junipero Serra High School in Southern California in December 2015 to enroll early at Arizona. • According to Tate’s mom, Khalil learned how to throw a football from his grandmother and would ask his grandmother to come over to the house to play catch on the front lawn. COLIN SCHOOLER – SOPHOMORE LB • The 2017 Pac-12 Freshman Defensive Player of the Year and All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention has already been named to the 2018 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List, which honors college football’s defensive best in character and performance. • Played in all 13 games and started the final nine games at middle linebacker last season. • Finished second on the team with 95 tackles (7.3 avg) and added four sacks with two interceptions, one of which he returned for a 66-yard touchdown. Had 81 tackles (9.0) in Pac-12 games. • Schooler recorded stops on 11.5 percent of his run snaps last season, which was the fourth highest among Pac-12 inside linebackers. • His brother, Brenden, is a junior wide receiver at Oregon, and last season marked the first time the brothers played against each other. Their parents displayed custom made half Arizona/half Oregon jerseys in the stands. • His dad, Tom, played football at Eastern Michigan while his mom, Christine, played volleyball at Cal State LA.
