Paul Walden's Street in Riga Opened

Paul Walden's street in Riga opened 26th of July, 2013 On Friday, July 26, an opening ceremony took place in Riga, Kipsala, to celebrate the renaming of a street near Riga Technical University (RTU) in honour of the excellent chemist Paul Walden. The ceremony in Riga was a part of Paul Walden's Remembrance Day events, organized to honour the chemist's 150th anniversary. PaulWalden was one of the greatest Latvian scientists, nominated for the Nobel Prize in chemistry at least seven times. He is the founder of dynamic stereochemistry and electrochemistry of non-aqueous solutions. Paul Walden was the rector of Riga Polytechnical Institute, a predecessor of RTU, and the only person who has been in office twice (1902 – 1905; 1916 – 1918). Paul Walden was elected as Honorary Member of RTU in 2011. «This is an important occasion both for RTU and for Latvian science as a whole, because too rarely do we pay homage to our distinguished scientists, who have not only made contributions to the progress of mankind, but also continue to carry the name of Latvia throughout the world long after death,» noted the rector academic of RTULeonids Ribickis. Reminding the importance of Walden's work, UNESCO included his anniversary in the Calendar of Anniversaries of 2013 alongside such outstanding personalities as Claude Debussy, Giuseppe Verdi, Martin Luther King, as well as Rudolf Blaumanis and Jazeps Vitols. UNESCO Latvian National Commission in collaboration with RTU, Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, the museum of Ungurmuiza and the municipalities of Riga, Valmiera and Pargauja organized a series of events not only in Riga, but also in other places throughout Latvia that have played a role in Walden's life. The events were attended by the Senate Chairman of Latvian Academy of Sciences academic Janis Stradins and Paul Walden's grandson Erkki Hollo. Paul Walden's 150th anniversary year neatly falls into place right after the 150th anniversary of Riga Technical University celebrated in 2012. The academic year of 2011/2012 saw a wide range of scientific, cultural and sports events. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).
